No, I am not, and no I wouldn't. I would happily spend hours on buses every day if it meant that I could get off the dole and have a bit of money and self-esteem.

Then why don't you. Go to your nearest temp agency and tell them you want work they could place you immediately.

    Here you go:

    http://www.pgl.co.uk/PGLWeb/Recruitment/Apply

You can apply online, and you don't even have to attend an interview, just put that you're willing to do anything and work hard on the application form, and they will give you a go. You don't need qualifications for most of the roles and they have several sites in Wales so you won't even be too far from home. (It would help if you want to work with kids, but they also need maintenance people, stores people, catering and cleaning staff etc). You also might get the opportunity to pick up some useful skills/training eg First Aid certificate, Food Hygiene Certificate, etc.

No connection to PGL other than having worked for them at a time when I needed a roof over my head, and ended up having one of the best times of my life. There's lots of similar companies, but PGL are the one where you don't have to travel for interview. ;)
Interesting- thank you. Sent off for a brochure :D

PGL looks interesting, but you'd still have to get the job.

You can't just work for them by applying.

Although it looks like they do the recruiting mainly from October, so you stand a better chance applying now than most other months.

Because, as the OP said earlier in the thread, the buses do not run to work hours often.

This is a common feature if you live in a village - the buses are not there to get you to/from work for the start/end times.

Although, as a temp, you can just state "I HAVE to leave at ...." and stick to it; something that would prevent you getting most full-time jobs.

While it could be an issue as a temp, many companies are just SO grateful to have anybody doing the job in their hour of need, that they usually let temps get away with this sort of behaviour of setting out their needs/requirements.

Whereas in the "real world of permanent work", you won't get the job if you start by saying you can't do the hours the job wants/needs.

OP just a thought is the area you live in surrounded by farms that could use some help?

I worked with horses from about 13 - its hard work but I loved it. x

There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.

I think (don't have a link at the moment) that the Govt has deemed that there is a "travel to work" time that is acceptable. I think they set it at 1.5 hours each way for people on the dole.

Although, of course, for people actually working and not signing on, many do find that their travel to work time is in excess of this.

 I've already answered this- I can get to my nearest big town by 10-30 and I have to leave by 4. Strangely there aren't any jobs there that can accommodate this. I know it is hard to understand, but we don't really have much office work or anything like that, mainly it is a smattering of shops and strange hours in pubs, hotels, and restaurants.

think how you could use the time to read your study notes

While a seemingly useful note, be mindful of those that can't read on a moving vehicle. I personally can't read anything (nor look down) for more than 1.5 minutes or I suffer travel sickness. I was on a bus the other week to meet somebody. They sent me a txt to say they were late, I replied to that (I am slow at txting) and that one simple act had me SO ill I nearly got off the bus, I forced myself to stay on the bus, mentally willing it to go faster, go faster, nooo don't stop at the stops to pick the people up ... And having got off I didn't recover from being light-headed/feeling like chucking up for about another hour.

I believe this applies to people who are long-sighted.

I don't think so, and my parents have fallen out with most of the farmers, but thanks for the suggestion :) shame too, I would love to do that. There is a stables up the mountain, I guess there is no harm in asking

The village I live in has 3 buses a day - all after 10.OOam and all finish before 5.OOpm, and none weekends/bank holidays.

If the OP cannot drive (and won't be able to afford to learn to drive on dole money), what's the point in saying she can work and needs to sort out the travelling - how exactly, can she do that?

Perhaps she should ask the JC to relocate her or provide her with a chauffeur lol

Perhaps the government should be sorting out the abysmal public transport in rural communities before insisting the jobs are just sitting there waiting.

    Lin
You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)
