Or just dial 17070, as I mentioned. This is also free of charge.hopperdennis said:
Ok, that should work then, and there is no charge (as nothing is active), a case of just calling my mobile phone and not answering, taking note of the tel#?Mister_G said:
Yes, as long as you borrow the base station as well.hopperdennis said:DCFC79 said:hopperdennis said:
The issue is I can’t seem to get hold of a physical landline phone to check it, and I’m keen not to buy one just for this purpose. Any other ideas?Mister_G said:OP - Have you tried dialing 17070? If it is a BT line, then it will give you your phone number.Borrow 1 from a friend.I know you said your reluctant to buy a phone just for this but cheapest 1 on Argos is £7.Buy 1, test the socket and just put it away, you never know you might need 1.DCFC79 said:hopperdennis said:

Got through to PlusNet, whom I would like to go with! They said it’s fine to go ahead and place the order if I don’t have the landline number to hand, as long as I know it’s active and won’t be pulled from the existing owner at any point (can they do that?)Croft12 said:hopperdennis said:

Have you tried speaking to a human. They ought to be able to see on their system who provides the land line - if anyone - and proceed with an order for broadband on that basis.
Bt, Plusnet or whichever ISP you want to use...

If the old owner still owns the line thats a problem. But i'd assume they have cancelled their line or transferred to their new property. You're back to a line test (borrow a phone) if you need it check active.

Got you! So it won’t be active if a tel# is not assigned to it?Croft12 said:hopperdennis said:

You're back to a line test (borrow a phone) if you need it check active. If its cancelled or the number has been moved then the line is there but unassigned you can take it up no problems and an order will go through. If its owned by the previous owner for some reason then the process will fail as they won't transfer the line to you. I think the odds are the former so prob no harm trying. If it fails you're no worse off than you are now...when/if you reach that point PN ought to be able to fix it one way or another. New provision etc...It can get complex depending on what the leaving owner/tenant did. eg
