Depending the exact model of router and providing it is not an antique most BT routers show a solid blue light when connected. Unlikely it will still be connected but it has been known to happen. If the previous occupiers have moved locally they may have taken the number with them.hopperdennis said:
Once I plug the (BT) router left behind in, how can I tell if there is an active service? Thanks again for all the patience and help thus farmolerat said:Plug a phone in to the BT socket and see if there is a dial tone. You could always plug the router in and see if there is an active service.Check here for what is available, there are loads of other comparison sites that offer cash back for starting a service

They haven’t over locally, my guess is the number remains! If the light turns blue, what does that mean I can then do, as I’ll still not know the landline number, but I’m assuming it confirms there is one and I can call BT to ask what it is or.....? Again, sorry for all the layman questions, and thanks for the help thus farmolerat said:

Just to update, the light turns blue (sort of...) with the BT router left behind plugged in, so there is a tel#, I just don’t know it, trying to get a hold of an old phone to plug into it as per the advice above, failing that I guess I need to call BT for it, and I can’t sign up with a new provider (PlusNet seem to be the cheapest in my area from the comparison link kindly posted) until I have the tel # correct? Thanks again for all the help and patience with me, almost there.0

PN=PlusnetAh so PlusNet will be able to connect me without having the landline number per se, as long as they know there is one?0 -

PN=PlusnetAh so PlusNet will be able to connect me without having the landline number per se, as long as they know there is one? That may be difficult without them knowing number, usual when signing up is put you landline number first, the robots check if they can supply or not then it goes forwardWithout a number you need a human, and humans are in short supply on customer services at present, and a knowledgeable / helpful probably more soNo harm in asking though

OP - Have you tried dialing 17070? If it is a BT line, then it will give you your phone number.1
