I'm nowhere near organised hence having to buy the book that Hypno recommended but I did buy one of them metal boxes that is fire proof and has a key so can be locked and is portable so I can take it to whichever room I want to work in. It has files inside you can name yourself.
So I have one for 'Important Documents' which holds pasports, birth certificates, national insurance cards, medical cards etc and this has really helped me.
I use the front file as 'Pending' so that when the post comes if I haven't got time to sort it straight away it goes in there til I have time to sort and then when it is sorted I either shred or transfer to the relevant section.
I also bought one of the thick A4 files and coloured dividers and I have filed all pensions, endowments, mortgage info, into their own sections and this also fits in the back of this box so eveything is literally in one place. I didn't want to leave these papers loose in one of the sections of the filing box, I preferred to put them in the A4 file so I could keep them in date order so they couldn't get mixed up again.
I have sections in the box for guarantees, instructions for appliances, receipts, car documents, house insurance documents, bank documents etc etc.
Before I got this I had years worth of (boring) pension info, endowment info etc in envolopes all over the place so now I open them and file in the right section..... Still don't read them properly as I should though
I have asked the bank to stop sending me paper bank statements as I use online banking and I find that paper statements just end up making a mess round my house or being shredded anyway.
I've just edited this post and the bottom disappeared but I think it said sorry for the ramble it was brought on by the 'lost passport' and that I hope Hypno you have had a quick and not too boring journey back home and you have a productive weekend.0 -
hi there, been off for a couple of weeks with the dreaded lurky but have been well enough to be reading the threads on mse, really kept me sane and often laughing....haven't been on yours hyno for a few days so just read your passport thread...oh my gosh....your thread is much more entertaining than any of the soap operas...pause whilst i go and check my passports...DS2 flies from london this week and i want to make sure we have his passport, we too have one of those metal boxes under our bed for passports etc (means we can grap it too in case of a fire and escape)......oh my gosh.... .i thought i was being paranoid in checking but it isn't there...he isn't answering his mobile and is out of the house so now i am going to have to hunt around...this isn't funny!
Hypno enjoy a nice peaceful weekend. you deserve it and now i know how you feel, he flies tuesday but not to europe so he is going to have to sort this out NOW...  :eek:0 -
Hi keeping motivated,
I used to have all my stuff in a metal box like that. Only problem is its the past tense. Used to.
You have reminded me that I need to get the thing back up and running again.
I need to keep paperwork now for the social stuff, and the myriads of stuff I will need for the chase to bigger and better housing.
Hope Hypno is around and recovering? Briefly read through the thread, if I had booked the night in the travel lodge, I would have packed the kids off, and I would have used the ensuite for a relaxing bath etc with no kids, no hubby, and then driven home all refreshed!! :T
I have booked one of those £9 a night ones for my birthday. and its book in by 3pm and out by 12noon. So I intend to use it!! my birthday treat to me. Mind you its not until end of July. so a long way off to wait yet. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -

LOL....DS2 just phoned after my frantic phone message...when i asked him where his passport was in my 'trying not to panic, non-panicky, but really very panicky' voice, he burst out laughing and asked me if i thought he had lost it....he has squirreled it away in the depths of his room as he doesn't think my locked up metal box is very safe..... apparently he 'always' keeps it there (er...NOT!)....but at least i have seen it now....
BTW, has everyone had a look on the 'things you've done when things got desperate' thread by CAFCgirl, it is hysterical, and sad, all at the same time.0 -
Hi Hyp.
Glad DH found his passport in the end. I really cant think why he didnt look there in the first place :rotfl:
I've just been tidying my desk, and found my passport, and driving licence. Not a clue why they're here, or how long they've been here. I assume it's from a CRB application. I will definitely put them somewhere saferIs it better to aim for the stars and hit a tree or aim for a tree and land in its branches :think:Loves being a Wonderbra friend :kisses3:

I think its because we have been reading for so long how important it has been for the children to go on this trip and how hard it has been and the sacrifices that have been made then when it should be the easy bit of getting them there the stress starts again!!!!
But you're right it has got us all thinking... Similar things with passports have happened to so many of us.. thats what prompted me to post about my file thingy to keep track of things.
We are all eagerly awaiting an update from Hypno too... Do you think we need to get a life or is that just me0
