HUGE gas cost savings

Having read the original and all the replies, I would say most people are thinking that the measures you have taken are fine for you but somewhat unrealistic/impractical for all of them to be used for themselves. Good advice yes, but not to suit everyone.
(e.g. I live in a new house with a thermally efficient hot water on demand system that basically stores the water at a constant(ish) temperature and heats when needed.)
I also concur that it is not constructive to ridicule you for what is an honest attempt to help people. For what it's worth the only time I was able to have the temperature at 12 degs was when the Mrs. was pregnant, as she had her own heat source then !!! Now that the bun is out of the oven we are back to the balmy heat she prefers.
p.s. May I be the first to say thank you then for an interesting thread that has whiled away a good 15 minutes of my lunchtime at work.Like a priceless jewel buried in dark layers of soil and stone, earth radiates her brilliant beauty into the caverns of space and time.

I thank you George for relating your fuel savings.
Unfortunately the female of the species would never allow such experiments or lifestyle in the majority of households.
Hence us well trained males, may submit a gufaw, but this is not at your expense, more at our own demise.
I would probably be following your example, (and may have to in future)
Keep well, Scat.
Oh by the way ALL boilers have a 24 volt supply inside to control the gas valve ( safetly cuts off gas if mains fails).
Some people may suggest that you may be able to obtain a second hand ignitor, from a boiler that has been replaced, or at a car boot, but I couldn't possibly advise that.
Always seek the advice of a qualified person, we dont want to see you blow yourself up now, do we?Moi....?

Quote from front page of this website:
"Money Saving is about cutting bills not cutting back. It's about being a sassy consumer. Companies try to screw us for profits. Money saving shows you how to screw them back."
This is not a dig at your life style George, but this site is about getting the same for less. Therefore I agree with your decision to sign over to Equigas/Equipower. Also, using gas as opposed to electric, which is cheaper even taking inefficiencies into account.
However, I do draw the line at living in a house at 12C!!! You could always go one further and spend all day down at the library.
No. I think this site is all about getting more value for your money - not trying to avoid spending any in the first place - don't forget, you only have one life:)0 -

If it needed 1.5 pence worth of gas to boil an unusually large container of water on top of the gas hob, are you saying it would cost about 3p if you used an electric kettle as the heat source, rather than closer to 6p?
Regards
George
Modern electric jug kettles are remarkably efficient by way of design. With a kettle on the gas ring, some of the heat is lost into the room - perhaps not too bad a thing in winter as it helps heat the room but in summer a definate loss. With the jug kettle, the heating element is inside the kettle, therefore very little heatloss, almost 100% efficiency, also you can put a very small amount of water in, for say a mug of tea and it will heat up in about 45 seconds, and automatic cutoff when boiling temperature is reached.0 -

Gas is only sometimes half as efficent as electricity because the heat is wasted as it goes outside through the flue, like in the case on a central heating boiler. A gas oven for example is not flued so no waste.
The heat from a pilot is not entirely wasted too. The heat from the pilot warms the heat exchanger so if its a combi or multipoint the hot water arrives at the tap quicker so saving gas as the main flame is lit for a shorter time.
Just thought I`d mention this. ;o)On the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.0 -

George,
You seem to be unduly worried about negative feedback(and lack of thanks) This is a chat forum and it is to my mind perfectly reasonable to disagree or be critical of any post that they consider incorrect, unwise or impractical. If someone disagrees with you on a particular point and says so - then that remark is, by definition, 'personal'.
There is serious concern about the effects of hypothermia; particularly for older people. This is one of the main reasons for the government giving a winter payment of £200. To advocate anyone should live in a temperature of 12C, in my book, borders on irresponsibility.
Therefore I consider some of your posts both unwise and impracical. If you consider that comment 'personal' then so be it.0
