OK, this might seem like extreme measures but it's working for me. Even if you don't want to go the whole hog, you might be able to make significant savings by checking out some of the ideas...deleted due to negative feedback.

    With respect George,
    I don't see anything remarkable in your findings at all. It's just common sense that if you don't use gas then you won't get a bill for it. :confused:

    I don't see this as moneysaving advice at all. I see it in the same catogary as 'Go to bed early so you save money on the electric used for lights'. or " wear you underpants inside out to save on laundrey bills" :D

    I am going to pursue a new board with the title " Stating the blindingly obvious !" :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

    None intended George !!

    I'd be interested to see the figures in 12 months. How much heating do you intend to use during the winter months, i.e. from when do you expect to put heating back on and for how long a day. That's the one part I can't see being able to be kept down to £25 per year in probably 99% of households

    This is one of the greatest money saving measures I've ever made. I've saved several hundred pounds a year to spend on more worthwhile things, whilst sacrificing very little by not using so much gas.

    Regards

    This thread would be better placed on the Gas and Electricty board, so I'm going to move it over there.

    I use minimal heating, just for a couple of hours a night at the coldest times. I find whole house heating to be very expensive; even environmentally irresponsible.

    Fair enough, are you able to clarify demographics of you're household, i.e. one person living there, family of 4 and if you are mostly out during the day or if people are normally in the house during the day year round(size of house also)

    This would never work for me. I am disabled, at home all day, and feel the cold intensely. Yes, I could wear thermal long johns and stay in bed all day, but, on balance, I think I'll continue with my decadent ways and leave the heating on when its cold.... ;)

    @George

    My comments were meant to be 'tongue-in-cheek' and no offense intended.

    I take your point about the pilot light. As a gas installer myself I am well aware of the waste of gas from pilot lights. Most new boilers these days come with electronic ignition and thus erradicate the waste of gas.

    I am not so sure the benefits of saving the gas can outweigh the costs of getting someone in to try to start the blessed pilot light again. I wouldn't recommend turning out the pilot if you are not sure how to relight it. Some of these older boilers are real pigs to get going again if they have been off for a while.

    Savings to the householder are minimal, but to the environment as a whole if everyone does it can be great.

    and it can be great for the plumber too !!
