Is it possible to purchase an electronic ignition module, do you know? This could be put on a timer and would be much better than needing to relight the pilot on a regular basis. I’m lucky that I never have difficulty relighting the pilot.

I've not come across one yet....but anything is possible in this group. Someone may come up with one for you.

It is not in the manufacturers interest to sell you an upgrade kit (if of course they have one) when they can sell you a new boiler !!

This thread raised a couple of questions in my mind:

    (1) Presumably this means that it's cheaper to heat the water in the hot water cylinder from cold to the required temperature, rather than keeping it hot all day?

    (2) Would this still apply if you have a washing machine that can connect to the hot water supply? If you use the washing machine a lot it must be fairly expensive if the washing machine heats the water each time.

    any ideas?

I took my hot fill off our washer andconnected both fills to the cold feed. With a combi boiler I realised that by the time the washer had drawn the hot water to fill, the water had only just about got hot at the point of fill. The boiler is upstairs in the airing cupboard and has about 10 metres of 15mm copper pipe to navigate to the washer.

I noticed the washer didnt always fill in a continuous fill either due to a water saving feature. This had the effect of keep starting and stopping the combi over a couple of minutes whilst the washer made its mind up about how much water it needed !!!

I was also told it isa british obsession with hot fill, the continent apparently prefer cold fill, and I believe detergents work better if entered while cold and brought up to temperature.

I never did any accurate sums but I am happy with the arrangement.

    George,

Do you do the washing up with cold water !!!

You beat me to that one. Friends thought I was mad getting a cold fill only but the above is the right way to do it.

As to pilot lights. If you have a boiler with a pilot light and separate hot water tank then it would pay you to spend a grand and fit a combi boiler. You would make the money back in a few years.

Gas bills. Mine was £78 first year, £91 second year and £90 this year. Combi boiler and no cooking. I only heat kitchen, front room and bathroom but like them on the warm side. If you don't mind it colder I could see (in similar circumstances to me) you could get the bill down below £40.

George, great post, as I read further it is plain to see why you are able to make such savings, one word, s'wimmin (or rather lack of ;) ) Oh if only twer possible in my house.

Hope the re-lighting doesnt fail you, (try it in a gale :D ), and that you have many hyperthermia free winters.

One point, even tho gas is 4x cheaper, it tends to be only half as efficient, hence your 12 degrees as opposed to ten if you didnt brew up. ;)

Methinks we are being wound up here.

You can save on water useage too if you dig a hole in the garden instead of flushing.

Why do you need a computer and the internet?

As I write, some 1324 people have looked at this thread. There has not been a single vote of thanks and the vast majority of the responses have been highly sceptical, to say the least. I am very sorry to have wasted your time. The cost saving measures work for me, but no part of them are of interest to anyone else, it seems.
