it is a shame the car manufacturers arent american .. maybe sadiq khan would sue the companies then

diesels were promoted by government via the road tax ..
Lower CO2 was promoted via VED.

Diesels just happen to be lower CO2, on average, than petrols.

It worked, too - the CO2 emissions of the average new car plummetted between 2001 and 2017 - from 178g to 121g.

People buy diesels because of the MPG, unfortunately most diesels are being driven into cities on commutes, crawling in traffic, where the MPG is awful and a petrol would be better, not least as the fuel is cheaper and it doesn't have problems with DPFs being clogged up. Someone who only drives long distance or does regular motorway runs is fine, someone commuting under 10 miles into an urban area is not.
It doesn't matter if the car manufacturer was American, you wouldn't be able to use American courts as a British citizen except with extreme costs and little chance of winning. You can always buy a Ford or Chevrolet or Chrysler or Tesla if you want an American car

We don't need a scrappage scheme, either buy the cleanest diesel and use it properly, or do your research next time and buy a suitable car for the uses you have. As a commuter, that might even be an electric

Chrysler is made by an Italian-American company headquartered in London and Amsterdam, currently merging with a French company.

Fords we buy here are built by the autonomous German subsidiary of a US company.

Chevrolet - as sold in the UK - was the Korean arm of GM, formerly Daewoo, but they left the UK market six years ago.

Most US-built cars sold in the UK are probably built by BMW.

The X series- and they have a shocking reputation. I don't think things have improved much since AMC built my old Jeep :o

Odd really, that US made tools are so good (at least the ones made out of Bethlehem steel were), yet the things they put together with them aren't. ;)

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Diesel is ideal for me. 20 mile commute most days and that’s along A roads. Regular motorway runs.
I’ve just got a diesel car. It’ll likely be my last ICE vehicle.

Yes but the point being they're American firms, hence an American could take action in America against them e.g. over the cheat tests. You're also making a needless pedantic post about this - the point is that the OP couldn't use the US courts even if they had a 100% American owned car brand

    No, not really.

Chrysler is no more "American" than Fiat, and soon Peugeot/Citroen/Vauxhall. Many of the Chrysler cars sold here were sold under the Lancia badge elsewhere in Europe, most weren't built in the US, and many weren't available in the US.

Chevrolet was no more "American" than Vauxhall was at the time they were sold here. The Chevrolet cars here were Korean developed and built, and weren't available in the US.

Like I said - if you want to buy a US-built car in the UK, in a form that's pretty close to what you could buy from a US dealer and with the same engines, your best bet is to head for the BMW dealer.
hence an American could take action in America against them e.g. over the cheat tests.
People in the US who bought their US-market cars in the US could take action in the US against the people in US who sold them those cars, regardless of where the manufacturer was nominally based.

How else do you think VW and Mercedes are on the block?

Clue: VW and Merc were the only companies who even tried selling diesels in the US in the period in question. Why? Because the US emission tests for US market vehicle sold in the US were and are VERY different to the European ones for European market cars sold in Europe.

Clue 2: The US is not America. It is one country in the American continents, comprising about a third of American people.

if you live in london and own a diesel you have been affected by the diesel scandal .. you have to pay the ULEZ pay extra for parking and your car resale value has plummeted
The attack on diesel drivers came after the VW dieselgate scandal
it is an interesting point that if it can be proven that the cars would have passed UK regs with or without the software .. why would the lawyers chase this ?
but it is clearly wrong to suggest that diesel cars owners have not suffered financial damage compared to owners of petrol cars

Resale value of diesels has "plummeted". By how much? Is a diesel now substantially cheaper than its petrol equivalent and by what kind of percentage?

    Hi
Have others noted that adverts for these keep on poping up all over the net now especially when one is looking for a Merc, etc.

IMHO, those in the UK will get nothing.

We are seasoned Mercedes Drivers but won't be bothering as we enjoyed our cars and at the time we did not buy them for 'emissions' etc but the pure luxury, looks, etc.
Our first brand new expensive car was a real Mercedes Drivers car a S class, we kept that one for years, early years of 2000
and gave it away to someone we liked and they still have it and love her.

Bottom line, people, Mercedes drivers including ex Mercedes drivers may get compo but not what those in the USA got for their VW group cars.
