It may be that originally the garages had no power and a previous owner went to the owner of your property, offered tea and cake and asked if they may run an electric feed into their garages. They may well have agreed to pay for the installation and pay each year for a mutually agreed amount that the electric may have cost. All very neighbourly, so neighbourly in fact, that when they moved on they failed to mention it.

Was this a wind-up post after all?

Or will the OP come back and update what happened when he turned off the power?

    hi guys so sorry

i have switched off the different feeds from my circuit box, but i can still hear the washing machine
can you have multiple feeds per switch?

he has ran his washing machine every day - i do think it is connected somehow.
the only option i haven't tried is switching everything off and then checking the meter box and see if the number turns

problem is family is working from home and need broadband connection etc, and we have kids going manic

Or even easier, just switch everything off while you can hear the washing machine and see if it stops. This isn't exactly rocket science.

They can take a 5 minute interruption I'm sure.

Give family a five minute warning to save any work, then turn off. They can manage without the internet etc for a few minutes. You are only delaying matters, rather than checking things properly as you were advised several days ago.

    No.
    Well, yes, but... no.

Technically, you could have two feeds coming into the same socket - but it'd mean that your circuit was also being fed by the other consumer unit.
    And where/whose is that...?
Does your stuff stay on even when switched off...?
he has ran his washing machine every day - i do think it is connected somehow.
And it's running even when all the breakers are switched off in your flat...?
the only option i haven't tried is switching everything off and then checking the meter box and see if the number turns
If the washing machine isn't on, then it's not using any power, so the meter wouldn't turn.
If it is turned on, then you can hear it.
problem is family is working from home and need broadband connection etc, and we have kids going manic
It's going to take ONE MINUTE to turn your consumer unit off when you can hear the washing machine.
    Can you still hear it?
Yes, it's still on? Then it's not coming through your CU. Turn it back on.
No, it went off? Then it's coming through yours. Turn all the individual breakers off, turn the main RCD on, and turn the breakers on one at a time, to see which causes it to start again.

And if you haven't interrupted the internet etc at all, obviously you haven't tried all the circuits yet.

Just a quick thought - if there is a washing machine in there (and there was a previous mention of using a pressure washer) then where is the water coming from?
