Good morning ladies. I am up bright and early today. Weather forecast says it will rain later so will work on the kitchen while it’s dry. It was raining earlier but has now stopped.
I will do a bit of welding but will focus on cutting the wood for shelving and sides so that I can paint the boards tonight. I am hoping that by the end of this week the 10 units I have been working on can be in usable stage and in their place in the kitchen albeit without doors. Will only finish off the doors once all units are installed as cabinets take up so much space and doors don’t. The door frames are also ready to finish off but don’t want to try and achieve too much. As you can see ladies the kitchen cabinet making has really progressed as this will mean 14 out of the 16 units will now be done!

Mortgage went out and now my balance is below £390k yey!

Initial mortgage bal £487.5k, current £258k, target £243,750(halfway!)

Welcome to SLLMs @ms_london. Studio flat sounds perfect with no children and mortgage free or little mortgage is a happy place to be for sure! We will be cheering you on so you find a place of your own! Feel free to post your progress in saving for your mortgagee property too! Xx
Thank you. I’ve already managed to save £80,000 (can’t quite believe it), but I’m not currently living in the UK so don’t want to buy just yet. Happy to keep plodding along with my savings.

I’m pleased to have found this group. It’s certainly a harder battle doing it alone but also amazing to be financially independent x

Thank you. I am fortunate enough to be earning a tax free salary at the moment but still had to make lots of sacrifices and lots of blood, sweat and tears have gone into it.

Oooh well done @ms_london. That's a great deposit!
Thanks for the advice about over paying @Sistergold. I think I'll have to keep squirrelling away what I can and make sure I get the house sorted first before I start in earnest! I'm dreadfully impatient...

Oh hello ladies. How are you all doing? On my end life has been very busy as I am trying to really press on to have a reasonable kitchen by Christmas.

    Mortgage update
Last month’s balance after monthly payment plus £999.99 OP.

Current Balance after adding monthly interest of £872.87

    Kitchen update
Carrying on with the kitchen has been challenging as fatigue is setting in and as you can imagine it’s the whole kitchen from scratch so really trying to keep the enthusiasm going by focusing on the end goal. Last weekend I finally managed to install the 3 final wall units onto the walls! This was really monumental knowing that finally all units are up as it means I can now deal with floor units. I was using the floor units for support when mounting the wall units as they are very heavy. I am hoping that this weekend I can progress the floor units. I have 3 units which need wood panels and fingers crossed I can do that and move them into the kitchen. I will also need to remove current units so there is quite a bit to do.

All in all 16 cabinets are needed and so to date I have now installed 7 so 9 to go. Of the 9 to go 7 are almost complete but still. Of the 7 almost complete 3(all welding done, painted but needs wood to be attached) are almost there 1(all welding done but still need to be painted and still need wood panels) not quite there but almost and 3(some welding still to be done, still need painting and still need wood to be attached) quite some welding to be done. 2 Units are still to be made from scratch! 🥺😢

This weekend and coming week I will need to see how far I go and I think at that point I will stop until after the new year so that I can tidy the house for Christmas. Keeping the house tidy has not been possible as the diy has been stretching me for time.
    Have a wonderful day! 🥰

Well done on the kitchen progress! I’m also about to tidy the house for Christmas.

I’m taking a break from overpayments and working on getting my emergency fund back in good standing.

Thanks @lantanna, let’s see how we manage with the Christmas tidy up.

  • I am wildly impressed with your kitchen build progress - wow! I have found a welding course starting next Sept - I currently have no outdoor space so I can't learn from home ;) However you have inspired me to make furniture

My 10 week diy course was great - we did basic plumbing - 2 weeks, plastering, drills, ceiling roses, etc and we finished by bricklaying !! I will do another course next term - maybe 10 weeks of carpentry..

@ms_london well done on your deposit - I am in a similar boat - saving to buy - but although I also live in london I am thinking I need a bit of outdoor space ..

@jak I can imagine there is so much to do, I guess OPs will have to wait their turn after rebuilding your EF and  doing what you need to have a liveable home.
    DON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff.    Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

@LadyWithAPlan, September is not too far off to do the welding course. Better do a course than just jump into the deep end! Yes after the kitchen I am looking forward to start making my own user friendly furniture with lots of storage! For now though last night I removed the floor corner unit and now have lots of cables and boiler pipe work to deal with! Feeling a bit overwhelmed on how to deal with it?!

The floor and wall are in a very bad state just like the rest of the house before I renovated it. I am hoping to lug that corner with the new units by end of this weekend. I need to cut the countertops first though! Let’s see how I get on!
