Note that the NTL name especially had a poor reputation for reliability and customer service at the time..

    Different name, same poor reputation!

Just to let everyone know the bill has come through this evening. When the engineer came out he has put it down as a non-fault and I was not negligent. I took his name but not sure how far I'll get...
    I'll keep the thread updated.

Thanks for the update. That's good to know. Can attack my garden with a little less concern now! :)
I'm not sure if I worded that correctly they have charged me the £99.
I knew this was going to happen when I read you'd opted for the Virgin engineer visit instead of ordering the £2.50 (free postage) ebay F-type connector for a 5 minute self repair.

Not everyone is into DIY, but if it only took the engineer 5 mins to fix then the charge is almost £20 a minute!

I would think if the Op has to pay this then in future, Op might well consider the DIY option. A few quid to buy and watch any of the multitude of videos showing how simple it is repair. But to be fair quite a few posters myself included, did think that in the OPs circumstances, there would be no charge?

If the job could be done in only 5 minutes including the travel time taken by the engineer to get to and from the job, that would be impressive!

As this is a moneysaving forum i would have to say that very basic DIY skills are essential for any home owner. If i couldn't even join a coaxial cable then i dread to think how much i would have spent over the years on paying people for work in my home.

Even if the OP is very rich and there time is very valuable they have already spent far more time organising the repair than how long it would have actually taken them. Plus now they will be spending even more time now to try and not pay the £99....

And don't forget there's also the phone line. Yes it is useful for free calls to Virgin!

Had same issue once. Despite the builder being fully aware if where to cable was routed, and me warning him to remember, when his team laid paving it was a couple of days before one of his team had cut the cable.

Virgin were good about it and came round within a day or 2 and fixed it for free.

Having said that, around this area many cables are installed very slapdash, wires popping out of the ground and pushed through hedges, sometimes lying on top of the ground.

Also, if your neighbour has Virgin, you may be able to connect phones and tablets to their Virgin hotspot. You need to install the Virgin Connect app.

In your case, if Virgin had tried to charge you for the repair, your builder would have been liable for the charge.
