Just choose something you like rather than what some book tells you the name means.

You can always check the meaning after you've chosen one or two. Tbh none mean horrible things, and you don't want to have to explain your choice to everyone his whole life so just pick one you like :)

Would also suggest it goes with your other son's name.

I disagree with the other poster about shortening names. If you like Theo, pick it. I don't believe there are any expectations, rules, or anyone's frowns over it not being Theodore. My niece is Becky, not Rebecca, as that's what my sister liked.

To put my vote in, I like Jude, Joe, Dan, Rob, Ray and Ted.

My mother was really upset with the names DH and I chose for two of our children as they are the shortened versions of longer names. We didn't like the long versions of them but that didn't stop my mother giving me real grief over them, particularly my son's name. She only shut up when I told her that the children weren't hers and therefore she didn't get to choose their names!

We chose names we liked, rather than names with "meanings". A lot of  the meanings  are just nonsense anyway. DH's name means one thing and he's the total opposite.

As long as the name(s) work well together and don't spell out something awful, go with what you like. We didn't have a name for either of my sons before they were born and spent six weeks trying out names to see if we could live with that particular name. Their names weren't decided until the day before they had to be registered.

As a teacher it is hard to comment on names...

When I first  get a register and before I have met the classes, I can make some guesses about the child just by looking at a name!!

For example double names than end in -May or -Rose or -Rae (e.g. Lily-Mai) often have a poor work ethic, kids with silly spellings of a name tend to have life issues. Harrys have a tendency to be cheeky or naughty. Ethan’s are often hard work.

(Obviously there are exceptions before someone starts ranting at me that their Chantilly-Rose is angel...)

Oddly, I don’t object so much to Tiger... (Tiger Woods?). But just think carefully, whether it goes with the surname, whether the initials spell something rude or silly, or whether other kids will take the p*ss out of them.

Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

And avoid the (what should be obvious) pitfalls - I knew someone whose mother loved the name Richard so that's what her first son was called, despite the fact that she'd married a Whittington. He was called D i c k by everyone but her and she hated the abbreviation.
  • List a bunch of people that you believe are real fighters or survival stories. i.e. Aron Ralston. The movie 127 hours was a real life story of a guy who went on a hiking trip and got stuck in a narrow cannon for 127 hours. He survived. Simpils! Find a story you and your partner likes and if you like the name of the person the story is about, you could call your baby that. It would be a nice gift to the kid to know that they were named after a real life survivor just like they are. Hope this helped.
