Just go to the bank and do it. Say it's essential you pay it, else that very bank will issue a penalty won't they. These staff in branches don't get to decide what's essential. If it wasn't, you wouldn't be going there, they don't seem to get that. People need to withdraw and deposit cash, deposit cheques, pay mortgages, pay loans, pay credit cards. Not everyone can use online, it's also not the law too.

Pretty sure you cannot pay a credit card bill at the Post Office.

You can't but you don't need to. Pay the cash into a bank current account at a Post Office then pay the credit card online from the current account. Post Offices are still happy to accept cash, I paid some into my Lloyds account at a PO this morning.

    Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
Paying the cash in at the Post Office defeats the purpose as it still potentially puts a member of staff at risk, no different to paying the bill at the bank. Turns out my bank does not have any automated machines (small town, small branch - lucky they're still open!) so my only choice is to engage with a member of staff. Got a cash point that dispenses cash and that's it.

So you have taken cash out of a ATM to pay the credit card over the counter?

How did you infer that from what OP posted?
Nowhere has he said he has said he has withdrawn cash from ATM. He said that his local branch has ATM for cash withdrawal only; no facility to pay cash in, other than over the counter.

I do think, however that OP is making life unnecessarily difficult for himself.

Paying your credit card bill on time is essential so there's no reason NOT to pay it over the counter if you insist on using cash. If you've got no COVID symptoms then you are no more a risk than anyone or anything else the staff come into contact with. Alternatively take a 3 month payment holiday then you won't have to go anywhere, but you'll be charged the interest.
My advice would be to get into the 21st century and after this payment start using online/other easier services.

How am I making life unnecessarily difficult for myself?
    This is really simple:
    1. I have a credit card bill I need to pay
    2. I don't have available funds in my bank account to cover the bill.
    3. I do have cash put aside to cover the bill (which was not recently withdrawn from a bank account)
    4. I want to use the cash to pay the bill, but I do not wish to put the bank staff at unnecessary risk because I'm a considerate thoughtful person.
I'm simply asking if there are any viable alternatives to face to face contact at the counter. What's so difficult about that?

Chances are that if you want to pay a bill by cash, it won't be possible unless there is human interaction to verify it.  Automated machines aren't set up to accept credit card payments as far as I am aware.
I'm going to ask again - who is the credit card with?  That way the correction can definitely be answered correctly by others with greater knowledge of that particular institution than myself.

Its already been suggested to deposit the cash into your bank account using your bank's ATM - most offer this facility. Then use online banking to pay your credit card bill. Why is that so hard to understand?

I know, but the OP can't do that.
