Zafiro. You,re both going through a tough time.  Sending you my kind thoughts.

Unexpected  medical. Issues like this can cause severe culinary challenges so stocks of "soft" foods like lentils for  soup, semolina etc are always worth holding, as is having one of those lidded drinking beakers with a spout.  It,s surprising sometimes how spilling accidents can occur when somebody is unexpectedly physically challenged. They also help to keep hot beverages warmer for longer.  I know yiur aoah is currently forced to use a straw but ne of these gadgets might make life a little ess accident prone in his next recovery stage.    Good luck.  On second thoughts, maybe the semolina might also be a NO No.

C1& C2! Blimey, what on earth happened?
He stepped and fell backwards off a Black and Decker workmate in the hall, only 2' high, banged his head on the wall and shunted his neck. How can something so minor cause so much damage!!!
He was in A&E within 40mins, superb and fast treatment - the feeling to his feet and lower legs has now returned, thank goodness.
He was allowed home on the early side because of his job pre retirement. However, he can be stupid and obstinate so I may well have a battle on my hands.

Today - Lunch, Soup but not reverse meal planned
Tea, I added a few different spices to the leftovers from yesterday to give it a different taste, followed by orange flavoured custard, using up the milk and cream from the fridge.

My word he is fortunate to have the feeling returning. I had a bizarre episode nearly 20 years ago - we were having a new extension built on the kitchen 8/12 sided brick based, slate roof garden room and DH had put up temporary steps, made from old roof joists. I stepped onto the top step, holding the basket of freshly washed laundry, ready to put it on the line after rain, and slipped, landing in seated position five feet lower, on bottom step. I caught the washing in the basket and didn't throw my arms out to steady the fall. Months later I had some numbness in my feet and hands, with plenty of pins and needles but as we did not go to A&E there was no diagnosis until about 7-8 months later, after I reported the pins and needles to my lovely GP after we had moved house and he sent me to hospital for an X-Ray. I shattered L1 but my spinal cord was intact (the surgeon I was referred on to said it was because I caught the washing).

The surgeon explained that it takes about 6 months for 75% of the healing of the bones to take place and for them to be relatively stable (and ongoing back episodes caused by nerve damage and what he referred to as muscle memory of pain - so twisting awkwardly can still set off an episode, even today). Your husband needs to understand the impact if he does too much too early, and that the symptoms may last a lifetime. If it were me today, once the bone is stable I would see a physio to understand the exercises to do to strengthen any resultant weakness and protect the impacted area. Being so high this would be completely different to mine.

In reverse planning, we had a large roast shoulder of pork, slow-roasted for 6 hours, which was genuinely the best I have ever cooked. DS and DH agreed, and there is a lot left over for during the week.

zafiro.   This is wise advice about doing regular physio advice once your OH appears to have recovered.  The condition of  Spinal joints, especially when damaged, degenerate rapidly as you age and can cause you to lose all your mobility in a relatively short space of time.   I have learnt this bitter lesson from experience!

    Yesterday
I decided I could do with creating space in the freezers so I spent quite a lot of the day using the oven attached to the woodburner to puree all the apple pieces I had already frozen. Most went down into a puree but the Bramleys were the best as they stayed whole. All now in containers and frozen again. I think it has freed up some space.

Yesterday lunch;- pumpkin soup courtesy of a friend and delivered by a mutual friend. I took the opportunity to nip out to the supermarket whilst the mutual friend 'babysat' or should I say 'mansat'

I can't remember exactly when, but it was in the last few days, I got a 500gm pack of cubed venison out of the freezer. Tea No1 was the 'sludge' recorded a couple of days ago, leftovers had some chilli and garlic added for just a different flavour that made yesterday's Tea no2. There was a small bit left over plus quite a lot of the sauce so I added a few more vegetables and a splash of red wine - well actually a few splashes - and turned it into soup which we will have today for lunch.

Quite pleased with myself - not only reverse meal planning but meal stretching as well.

I took a bean and veg goulash out of the freezer for lunch today which we had with some LO rice from last night.  Was a bit hotter than I remember from when I made it!

Tonight will be the LO faggots from a couple of days ago with mash and green veg from the freezer - probably green beans and petit pois.

Afternoon all. I’ll be sending some chicken to the freezer later once I’ve stripped the carcass from the weekend down. Hoping to get three more meals plus a pan of stock from it as it must have been gold plated judging by the price!

Tonight is one of our “standards” in the shape of couscous with roasted veg (sweet potato, onion and chickpeas tonight I think) and halloumi. It’ll be topped off with toasted mixed seeds and a drizzle of the rather tasty “Crucials” mint & yogurt sauce that goes so well with so many things. Probably a sprinkle of za’atar on top as well for a little added flavour.  Staying on plan, I’ve taken the cauli pasta cheese bake out of the freezer ready for tomorrow as well - it can give the fridge a little help by defrosting slowly in there until we need it.

*edit*  well the chicken is forgiven - 2 lots of chunks, plus one lot of gribbly bits for risotto in the freezer along with the carcass and bones ready for stock making, plus enough small pieces of white meat for lunch rolls for us both tomorrow - that’ll go down a treat with some garlic mayo.
