So, big order placed which will see us OK for another couple of weeks. Then at 8am this morning the front doorbell woke us, a box of "emergency food supplies" courtesy of HM Government on the doorstep, presumably because I'd registered on the gov.uk site. Not impressed with the contents - longlife milk which we hate, box of a cereal we've never heard of etc., so trying to figure what to do with it so it doesn't go to waste! I didn't get to the front door fast enough to tell the delivery driver we did not need anything!3

"the government has given to you." No the taxpayers."Not impressed with the contents - longlife milk which we hate, box of a cereal we've never heard of etc.," How ungrateful!

If you bothered to read the list of dreadful ailments for the priority cases listed on the GOV site, you might be a bit more sympathetic-----these are the most unimaginably ill and disabled people that exist-----this is about terminal cancer and similar, not in-growing toenails !
I can only guess how badly treated you must feel, Chrishazle, especially as you have been a loyal customer of Tesco for years. But I have to say, as someone who uses all the main online grocery deliverers from time to time, I have always found Tesco to be the one supermarket which just doesn't give a damn about its customers whenever there is a problem. Top of the best online grocers BY FAR is Ocado, a company which is in a class of its own----------and will only get even better due to its new co-operation agreement with M&S which starts in the Autumn ( Corona permitting ).
But in your particular circumstances now, I fully agree with your conclusion that Sainsburys and Waitrose are the online supermarkets for YOU to use as they are the only ones to have based their whole present delivery strategy on the GOV site of health-priority shoppers ( and good for them). I hope you find it easy to get on their lists of priority cases and get your groceries from them both----they both stock very good products. I hope you and your wife get through this anxious period which is more of a nightmare for you both than for the majority of the rest of us. My best to you both.0 -

Chrishazle I work for a supermarket in the Online department and have done so for the past few years. From my understanding the Government supplied us with a list of vulnerable people which was then cross referenced with existing customers to identify those customers who were indeed vulnerable. This process does not seem to be flawless and there have been many people who have been missed off.
The difficult point is people can't get through to update to let us know that they are vulnerable. I believe our contact centre have been taking around 60000 calls a day and is at more than maximum capacity.
With Online Drivers and many other key staff going into isolation this has only made the availability of delivery slots or click and collect slots less.
Also, some of the people who are successful in getting a slot are ordering shopping for perhaps 3-4 families which increases van weight and reduces the amount of orders we can deliver on one run. We can only drive the vans for a specific amount of hours before having to return, which is a legal requirement.
I'm not trying to justify our position but to try to explain the processes behind the scenes to give an understanding of what has to happen for a delivery to take place.
I know us and other supermarkets our on a big recruitment drive at the moment but even with more temporary staff in place there are still legal and training requirements that have to take place before for example someone is allowed to drive a delivery van.
Hopefully in the coming weeks the situation will improve and more slots will become available as everybody adapts to the current situation.5 -
We all appreciate the efforts that all supermarket staff are giving but the question a lot of us are asking is why is Tesco taking on new online orders when there are many vulnerable long time loyal customers that are unable to book an online slot. These are people that depend upon deliveries but may not qualify for the Government vulnerability list3

Sorted the gov box - village corona help line arranged someone to collect it and use it for the village food bank, box was collected yesterday late afternoon - a couple of hours after I finially got an email reply from the Shield people delivering them. Also re-registered on the gov.uk site saying we did not need food aid - only way!Now the better news - haven't tried yet. Had an email from Tesco saying we were now registered as priority customers and from our grocery account we can request a priority home delivery slot, apparently they will not at the time of ordering give you a specific time slot "You won’t be able to choose a fixed 1-hour delivery slot. Instead, you’ll be able to choose one that has an 8-hour range – either from 10am to 6pm, or 2pm to 10pm. Then, on the day of delivery, we’ll text you to let you know when your 1-hour slot is within that window."So, Tesco were the last of the 3 to say they would use the gov database, Waitrose were the first (I'm still waiting for my invitation email) and Sainsburys I could not register with.WELL DONE TESCO!!

So the whole of this thread aimed at rubbishing Tesco was to end with "Well done Tesco" ????

I can only tell as it happens - and the initial attempts to shop online were useless, as were attempts to contact customer service. However, the end result is I was lucky enough to grab a C&C slot for Tuesday (don't ask me how it suddenly appeared) and now have a home delivery slot for Sat 25th - which is roughly when we would have done another supermarket run after one on 7th April. Also I still have not had an "invitation to book a delivery slot" email from Waitrose, who were the first to broadcast that they would be prioritising their vulnerable customers and those identified by the government database. So - after a rocky start, Tesco have come through.0
