Thanks InvigillJill - that's interesting info, it seems that there is still much confusion out there. I work at two Academies and a Girls High School, it might be worth contacting them on the off chance.

Exam invigilators how many weeks do you work a year? I seen some talk about 6 weeks but do some work more?
How do you survive all year on 6 weeks salary? Or is this a job that mainly retired people do?
It seems abit ridiculous that people want furloughed when they only work a few weeks here and there.

I'm a casual temp PAYE with one of the examination boards. I was laid off with 24 hours notice, as per my contract terms.
I was told there would be no new contracts for summer 2020.
It appears that this is generally the case for all casual contract workers in the education sector.
This includes, invigilators, processing operatives and markers.
The only work on the horizon would be the November re-sits, if they go ahead.1 -
Yeah to be honest you cant really be expected to get much if you only work say 6 weeks a year. Divide those earnings by 52 weeks maybe your entitled to get something but would hardly be worth your while.
Surely this isnt a job that people rely on money wise. You cant work 6 weeks a year and tell me you desperately need that money.0 -

I work for an academy school in Dorset I agree , the County Council told me it is up to the School Academy to decide . Ours have still not told us.The comments about only working 6 weeks are not correct or helpful .
I work over 6 different months Of the year and summer season is full time .Many exam invigilators do heavily rely on this wage , due to their own personal circumstances with their children or family members health they choose to invigilate .
We have PAYE we are employed but it looks like we have little support working for academies .Please let us know on here any success (or otherwise ) stories2 -

To clarify .... it is not 6 weeks per year, but a minimum of 6 weeks over the summer exam season. Realistically it as actually more likely 10-12 weeks between April-July. In addition to approximately 4-6 additional weeks during the year. For some people this is essential earnings worked around looking after their children.1

Another invigilator here wondering about the possibility of being furloughed. For those saying it’s just 6 weeks work, you are wrong. Many invigilators like myself work for more than 1 school. I personally work at 2 Grammar schools and a University Technical College. The May/June exams are the main period providing full-time hours, but on top of this I work the mock exams too, which different schools hold during different months for 2-3 weeks at a time. I have done these in oct, nov, jan, feb & March dependent on the school. As well as mocks I am also requested to work on various other ad-hoc days/weeks throughout the year. This included 6th Form silent study supervision in the weeks leading up to the main exams, intermittent admissions testing days, transition days for new joiners, summer results days, 11+ tests in September & even as extra help in preparing the exam certificates. This all adds up to the equivalent of a small part-time salary across the course of the year.

I looked at the DoE guidance for temporary school closures and it states "Pay

Yes. Teachers and other school staff will continue to be paid during this period as normal, and we expect schools to continue to fulfill their contractual duties to their staff.
Will teachers and other school staff, be entitled to sick pay for an absence caused by coronavirus (COVID-19), including the need to self-isolate if a member of their household has displayed symptoms?
Arrangements for teachers and school staff sick pay are agreed between employers and relevant unions. We have confirmed that schools will receive the same level of funding regardless of any period of partial or complete closure, and so would expect pay to continue as normal.
Supply teachers and other contingent workers
Should schools continue to pay supply teachers and other contingent workers?
Schools will continue to receive their budgets for the coming year as usual, regardless of any periods of partial or complete closure. This will ensure that they are able to continue to pay for staff and meet their other regular financial commitments. We expect schools to continue to pay staff they employ directly in the usual fashion, and correspondingly not furlough them." I can't see why they just can't pay us!!
