This is so simple, ask the police to phone your employer - is it really that difficult?

But it's not, key workers are DWP and NHS workers. How often do you read about not being able to get through?
I know you will suggest a direct line, but there are only so many lines and if they are all in use then you cant get through.

In the event the police don't believe you and issue a fixed penalty notice, you have the option of challenging the fine in court. Just as with anything else the police might issue a FPN for. Although be aware that the coronavirus law sets no limit on the fine a court can impose.

Its not that simple because I'd be travelling to do a night shift, so my boss probably wouldnt answer.

I have a family of overthinkers (I got the overthinking gene too, but have worked hard to try to keep it under control - not always successfully!).  I can recognise the symptoms.

    OP, you're overthinking this.

Chances are you won't even be stopped.

If you are stopped, you have been given umpteen ways to deal with that.

As I've said to my own beloved overthinkers (and to myself when the gene takes over):

"the amount of time you spend worrying over something that might never happen!!!  It's not healthy and it's not productive.  Use your worrying to find solutions, use them if needed, and give yourself peace!"

Or, more bluntly, as I had to say to one of my beloved overthinkers recently:

"what's the point in trying to avoid the coronavirus if you're just going to worry yourself to death over 'what ifs, maybes and imagines' instead?"

It actually had a limited amount of success rather than being completely ignored, for once!

    What would Buzz do?

I used to be Snow White - but I drifted.

Under English law wouldn't  they have to prove you weren't going to/from work (or one of the other permitted reasons). As long as you are on a reasonable home-work route how are they going to do that?
Yeah true,  so I'm nervous over nothing?  Its just that on our local news last night police set up road blocks and were pulling everyone in on this particular road. They were alarmed at how many were breaking the lock down rules and were taking their family for days out, and had no choice but to fine them.
My point is I could lie and just say I'm traveling to work to fob the police off, but really could be visiting a friend or something,  when that is not allowed.
Or am I over reacting, these are strange times.
Over reacting. Just go to work chance are you won't be stopped but if you are just answer what is asked of you.

My son's employer has issued the staff with letters to show to the police if stopped.
So has my son's employer, but given as he cycles to work along the canal towpath, I doubt anyone will challenge him. Getting to Work an d exercise are both legitimate reasons for riding a bike😁

My daughter works for BUPA. she has been given a letter to "Whom it may concern" confirming that she (name) is a key worker in the social and care industry and that she is travelling to and from work. These letters have been given by employers to all those in the key worker industry. Letter to be carried with them in case they are stopped. Hope that helps - try to stop worrying everyone everything is under control.

A "boss" who doesn't answer the phone when he's not actually at work?
What happens if there's something seriously wrong at work for example?
AS already said, OP you're over thinking it. Just go to work, and answer truthfully if stopped.

...and if you are not an essential worker, you should not be going to work.
