I think I would go with the £600 and just split the loss between you....hard as this is.  £150 per household and the knowledge that you are not taking a risk with your vulnerable family members.  We were facing this but as ours was this week we were able to re schedule (not Sykes).  We had decided way back that we would not risk our 80 year old and have to go down and loose deposit knowing while a hit in our wallet at least we were not taking a risk.
You certainly need to address the possibility of them drawing £2600 direct from bank!!! not sure how to combat that.
Sadly my understanding is travel inurance would not help.
You mention 4th July and occupancy is back to normal....4 different families in one house!!!  Not clear on that myself!!
  • In the same boat as many many others but have a trip booked with Sykes staying at a cottage end of July - group of 12. We have all agreed we will not be travelling as we have some over 70's in the group. Only £20 deposit paid so far - final balance due next week but as of yet no option to change dates or cancel without paying a large cancellation fee. Would be happy to change dates but concerned at paying a final balance next week for a trip certainly will not be happening for us this year - we are happy to 'delay' until next year though.

My debit card expired a few months back and i am reluctant to give Sykes my new details without confirmation our date can be changed, does anyone know what would happen regarding my balance if i fail to give my new card details?!

If the debit card is replacing a expired one, then I expect any payments linked to the old card to continue if it's an automatic payment.
I believe if the card is reported stolen, this may not happen.
New User name as MSE gave me a number in my old one.

  • Good insight - thanks!
  • As an update - rang Sykes, got through in 5 mins, explained my situation - changed my dates to next year, final payment not due until June 2021. Panic over!
  • Looks like we are in a similar situation to a lot of people here
Holiday booked at the end of July, no guidance as to whether we will be free to travel then and our payment was due on Friday £2400, phoned Sykes and asked if the payment could be delayed until further Government guidance, Sykes weren't interested in any compromise, eventually felt compelled to cancel and hence had to pay £800 lot of money to probably lose, will have to try and claim it back at a later date I guess.

Feel Sykes could maybe have acted in good faith and delayed the payment but as my 'A' Level Law student daughter keep reminding me Contract law is law dad

Present roadmap is travel in Uk will be allowed from 5July in England and 15 July in Scotland
  • I have been trying to get a response from Sykes since the beginning of June but with no luck.  I have had to cancel our holiday in Scotland and the owner of the property has agreed to this and that we should get a refund of our deposit.  Sykes have apparently not replied to the owner's questions either.  What do we have to do to get them to act like a reasonable and professional company?

What was the date of the holiday?

  • Update: I originally posted on here back in May,had to change my booking from June (paid in full in April) due to lockdown.Rebooked for September instead-was £76 cheaper so I expected a refund.Sykes would only apply credit to my account.
I repeatedly asked for it to be refunded in cash and Sykes kept refusing.
I thought it was going to happen after the CMA got involved with the refund saga so in July I asked again for cash quoting the CMA but I received this from Sykes...
Please note that where you amended the dates of your booking, and your previous booking started in a lockdown period, but your new booking starts outside of a lockdown period, normal terms and conditions apply and you are not currently eligible for a refund for either booking. If you wish to amend or cancel your booking, normal terms and conditions currently apply.

I wrote back yet again saying I would send their email to the CMA which I did and that I still wanted a cash refund.

I heard nothing back from Sykes.

Randomly on the 21st August it was refunded onto my card.

I've received no correspondence from Sykes,I only found out when I logged in to check my September booking.

I know it's only a small amount of money but maybe my update may help someone else.

And I'm happy with my refund, finally.
