carolinerunner said:I've sprouted some beans/lentils, some are nicer than others. Had to throw the pinto bean shoots away, they were gross, like alien creatures. A few of the mung beans stayed rock hard and nearly broke my tooth (my teeth are rubbish anyway and several are crowned) which would have been very very bad atm. So I might stick to lentils, at least they all seem to go soft even if they don't sprout. If the lockdown ends in 3 more weeks I might just about have edible veg! The sunshine is helping I'm sure.

our misfits box came, another large turnip-I'll cook those for my lunch today and some chicken wings; dh will eat some leftover pot roast. We got another mango, some pears and some oranges. Another large celery that I think i will just dehydrate as we have one already. Some potatoes that I think I will turn into a lamb stew over the weekend--maybe scotch broth. We really like that. I pulled 1kg of beef mince from the freezer and will make stuffed peppers for dh for tonight's dinner and use the other 1/3 to make some spag bol for tomorrow. Sunday dinner will be a silver side (i believe that's what you all call corned beef) braised in cider and brown sugar with carrots and potatoes.8

A massive £51.50 spent at the market this morning, nearly all of it on fruit & veg, but £6-odd on little plants to supplement what's already coming up at the allotment. Because some of those probably aren't what I'm hoping they are! So these are to fill in gaps where I need to tweak little weeds out...
Everything was so much more expensive than usual! Except mangos (2 fr £1) avocados (3 for £1) & raspberries; I "scored" 10 large punnets of slightly-going-over rasps for £5. Once I'd picked my way through, I had half a punnet of waste to go into my bean trench, a 6-tray dehydrator full to add some crunch to HM granola and 7 full 1lb jars of raspberry & lime "with a hint of mint" jam, plus a half-jar. Sadly you don't really get the mint because the plants haven't yet popped up enough to take much off, but there is - just a hint. Enough. So £5 well-spent, IMHO!
Meat will come out of the freezer this week; we're drowning in eggs (about 50, large & small, at the last count) and there's plenty of cheese, if not the Brie I'd like. So I shall trot up to the baker's tomorrow morning on my way over to the allotment for a granary sourdough loaf, but that should be everything for the week.Angie - GC Aug25: £106.61/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)7 -
@Suffolk_lass, yes the ones I bought are just ordinary eating ones, the greeny/brown ones did, and the tiny dark green 'lentilles vert/Puy lentils' did too. Trying orange ones atm, I don't think they will but you never know!

@Suffolk_lass it turns out orange lentils do sprout too! Much to my amazement. I always thought they were the lentil equivalent of easy cook rice. I've looked them up and they sort of are, they're hulled, split and polished - how can they possibly sprout after all that?!

Thank you carolinerunner and candygirl - I might have to give some sprouts a go. The days of irradiated treatments are hopefully long-gone (by EU regulation that came into force in 2010, I believe) - let us hope this isn't one of the areas the UK discards regulatory control overSave £12k in 2025 #2 I am at £4863.32 out of £6000 after May (81.05%)
