Current guidance is one week self isolation and not to go for walks but stick to private gardens.
I've ordered disposable gloves as it seems to be a touch illness rather than airborne. Luckily they are not yet subject to the same profiteering as face masks. To use if I do have to self isolate as I don't live alone.
I am increasing cleaning materials and basic medicines to cover a weeks need, and discussed self isolation measures with Mum. We always have plenty of loo roll anyway! Plenty of food between freezer and cupboards.
I'm a bit worried for myself as with my issues it'd hit me hard, but much more so for Mum as she is mid 60s, asthma, diabetes, Crohn's and works too many hours.4 -
Poor you! That environment would drive me doolally! Is there no escape?PasturesNew said:I would comply.... however, I am not currently in full control of my environment.
I am lodging with a home owner who is not hygienic. At first I was using the microwave/fridge/freezer minimally - 4-weeks ago I stopped even that minimal use 99.9% of the time, I have a secret kettle and am living on cold peas and pot noodles. This person is already somebody who SHOULD have self-isolated a month ago when they flew in from a high risk area, but they didn't; they were out every day socialising and going god knows where. I was pleased they weren't here, but fearful/aware that "they walk among us".
If we all had to self-isolate I'd be trapped in a house with somebody who I see as a liability and unable to read the riot act about cleanliness, hygiene and maintaining a safe shared kitchen.
No man is worth crawling on this earth.

This is the problem with all the well meaning advice on hand washing etc. It can most definitely be airborne and that message seems to have been lost. One of the experts on the news tonight was saying you can catch it just be having a conversation with someone infected and sharing the same airspace. It can also linger in the air after someone has coughed. This is why in some countries people have been advised to keep a distance between each other in bars, restaurants, markets, shops...KxMx said:I've ordered disposable gloves as it seems to be a touch illness rather than airborne.

It's airborne in as much as it is carried through the air through droplets when people breathe, cough and sneeze etc. These droplets must settle somewhere, and it's these surfaces we all touch. Hence the handwashing advice and recommendation to wipe surfaces down. Ventilation is a very underplayed piece of advice but that helps too.pineapple said:KxMx said:Current guidance is one week self isolation and not to go for walks but stick to private gardens.

I've been reading this thread in the hope that someone else was in the same boat as me, but I have to ask a question - I am the only carer for my DH who (Obviously) lives with me, we are fairly stocked up on food and household stuff but his tables run out next week so I have to go out to get them. My question is what happens if I am ill? I have looked online but can find no answers he has COPD Angina and mobility problems. I only go out if it's necessary but am so scared of bringing the infection home on my clothes say that I am getting paranoid about it. The last thing I want to do is to give him any infection, it's very worrying.
It;s my Birthday today but I've put that on hold as I am so worried about him.Quot Libros, Quam Breve Tempus

I found out yesterday that one of the meds I'm on predisposes me to the worst effects of the coronavirus should I be unlucky enough to catch it. I shall be in touch with my GP by phone this morning in the hope that I can drop it and be given an alternative. DD2 who is a GP has put us on shut in as of yesterday, the scariest moment of my life so far. A nights reflection hasn't changed much and I shall have to contact the charity shop where I volunteer and pull out from there for the duration. I wish, oh I wish this wasn't happening!6

Happy Birthday! Does your local chemist have a delivery service? A lot do these days.

Not a carer as such like you but otherwise situations are similar - we've been isolated for a week now and plan to continue till - whenever!
I've not been out either but hubby's prescription might come today so I'll have to go get that - but will only be in chemist for seconds - leave it there - back out to car and then back after half an hour to collect. I do this monthly but am going to sort out a chemist that will delivery for next time (if I can). We aren't seeing anyone - including our sons.
I'd change when I got back, shower and wash hands thoroughly - that's all you can do. I'm even wary of post now and any deliveries by parcel - after reading the virus can stay on some surfaces for a week or more.
Someone rang a phone in last night about what if a carer gets ill - they were 'reassured' that plans are in place - but no one knows what?

I'm aware most viruses are both airborne and contracted through touch, coronavirus is no different.
Lots of information is out there, some conflicting, most of what I've seen suggests airborne is much shorter lived than a hard surface, though of course coughing directly at someone still isn't wise!
In any case face masks are now eye wateringly expensive (I bought them up until last year so I know how much they should cost) and if I had to self isolate I feel gloves would be the best thing for our household. As I would not share a room while Mum was present and only dash in and out of kitchen etc. Touch infection is definitely riskier for us than air.

We had planned to go out for a celebration meal on Sunday with a couple of friends.Me & OH are still happy to go but I've asked my friend what she thinks as she has severe asthma and may want to keep herself out of the way of potential infection.
