what are the are chances of a complete loss, in a portfolio like this?
Practically none. But I'd be a bit concerned if a platform website failed to work properly, imagine a day when everyone wants to trade, causing pressure on the website!
yeah, I will be honest this is a concern in itself - it seems like it may not be an isolated incident from others responses on here as well.
It was isolated to a sunday morning when nobody really needed to see their account balance. Perhaps the servers were having a little lie in with breakfast in bed.

Through your Vanguardinvestor account and LifeStrategy investment you are invested in an open-ended investment fund, which accepts subscription or redemption requests in advance with a daily cut-off for 'buying' or 'selling' at a price calculated with reference to 9pm market values on business days for the underlying shares and bonds listed around the globe. You are not competing with other market participants to buy an individual share on an underlying market in real time. While reliability of the website interface is important, it is not as critical as you imagine, for how you are planning to use it.

Vanguard have literally trillions of dollars under management or administration and hopefully their UK retail investors web interface will have been designed to be robust. But now you have heard the comforting words from others here, that the fund will not simply implode and cease to have a value, you can relax and enjoy your Sunday.

Vanguard will not give you advice, you are responsible for your investment selection, not Vanguard.

I suspect their site is getting hammered with traffic.  I can log in but it takes ages, and longer still to show the fund summary.
  • With £130bn wiped off the FTSE 100 this morning is anyone else thinking of making a market debut with a vanguard stocks and shares ISA to track this index? According to vanguard the FTSE 100 has a 5/7 risk factor.

That particular index has a poor reputation and should only be considered, if at all, as a constituent of a much more broadly diversified portfolio - what else are you invested in?

The FTSE100 is very poor index.   Whilst single sector investing (ie.. 100% in one single sector) is a very bad idea.   Investing that 100% into a FTSE100 tracker is just daft.

According to vanguard the FTSE 100 has a 5/7 risk factor.
Nobody takes any notice of the KIID risk reporting.

I've not had any problems with the site today or the past few days. I've just made a sell order request on the site and it went through as normal. I'm going to reserve the cash in my account and buy units at a lower price, at this rate the market is going to plummet even more before it even contemplates recovering. When that recovery happens, nobody knows.
