I think you are right @belfastgirl23 I am worried but at the min I am carrying on as normal - but feel on high alert for people coughing near me etc

I think I will throw a few extra things in my shopping.  Painkillers, loo roll. Soups
I do love a tin of soup
I have got a health issue and so has one of my little uns, could cause  problems - as soon as someone sniffles at work, I am going to stop coming in.

I would be more worried about passing it on to others, kids. I am not that worried for myself at all

I think self isolating in a household of other people, would be very challenging.  You would have to rely on them to bring stuff outside the door and stay away from them, which is fine until you need to use the bathroom or shower

Seriously ....For food i am not overly bothered. We prob have enough food here for about 3 months. cleaning / washing items prob about the same.
only issue is milk and veg. But even if panic buying kicks in can always get some somewhere.
As for getting ill ....i am probably not high risk. so will probably just stay in more. lol
  • @justjohn Wow you are very fortunate
I would never be able to afford three months food in one go (although I dont think that is what u have done, brought it in one go)
My mum is like that, seriously a garage of food - shes accumulated it over long period, not cos of the virus, but i think she does it cos she remembers the days of being skint

Personally, I would say my biggest worries don't centre round having enough supplies in (as I've been steadily stocking-up for months) but in case I'm visiting somewhere else and some ***** of a Government Minister tries to make it awkward to get back to where I live and with no thought having been given by them to how the £100 a day average cost of being elsewhere (ie bed & breakfast and dinner out) would be covered (as I can't afford to) for however-long-it-took till they stopped any efforts at quarantining the city/town off. No, I wouldnt accept a camp bed in a church hall as adequate accommodation "whilst I waited" either and would remain in the b & b and be figuring out how the cost of it was going to be met (but not by me). I expect I'm far from the only person that would be worried they might land up "trapped" someplace else in the country with nowhere to stay (unless they paid for it themselves).

The other point is the way the World Health Organisation seem to regard people of 65 plus as "elderly" and there is already "advice" coming out to stay in and comments coming out about ageism possibly happening when it comes to who gets treated for this if they get it and then they promptly tried to "shift the goalposts" and decreed it would be a good idea for the over-60's to stay in to protect themselves. The Government seems to have forgotten just how many people (eg women who've got a revised State Pension Age) are still having to work in their 60's and can't just stay home to protect themselves from other people and to be overlooking the fact that the Equality Act made a few years back includes specifying provisions against age discrimination.

    Concerned but not worried.
I am immuno compromised and my 62 yo mother much more so, so we would both be vulnerable.
Looking at the stats currently I think I have more chance of being exposed to a seasonal flu strain I wasn't vaccinated against than coronavirus.
Italy had their first cases at around the same time as we did yet it's spreading much much faster there. I accept they have tested wayyy more people though (with a large elderly population) and as our testing increases our cases will go up.
I am being more through in hand washing especially when out.

Life is like a bath, the longer you are in it the more wrinkly you become.

I think all you can do is be aware and do your best for you, yours and those around you. I work in a shop, handling money, serving food, face to face. I’ve upped the use of sanitizer to every time I get a gap in the cue because it’s not possible to keep washing your hands every couple if minutes. Apart from that there’s not much else I can do differently. Where we live there is an above average amount of old, frail people so if the virus does arrive it could be bad but all we can do is eat a healthy diet and hope for the best. Panicking won’t help.

An understandable point to make, but the thing that strikes me there is that these things don't directly affect other people.

This virus, on the other hand, could damage the infrastructure of our society. We have already seen doctors surgeries close (ie affecting people with all the other illnesses being unable to access them). We've already seen schools close (despite the fact that many homes no longer have a stay-at-home parent and so the question arises of who looks after the children when they aren't allowed to go to school?).

Small communities could be badly affected. In a city there are plenty of other places to "take up the slack" if one or two close temporarily (or even permanently). In a smaller place it could matter a lot if some of their facilities shut and they might be at risk of some of those places remaining permanently shut after this is all over (ie even fewer facilities to use than the lower amount the place had in the first place). If a smaller place loses some of its shops, entertainment facilities, etc then it could become difficult to live in that place for the rest of your life - whereas, in a larger place, there's "Plenty more where those facilities came from" and people will still have a wide range of shops/social facilities/etc.

So people in smaller communities HAVE to keep using their facilities (shops, social, etc) as normal and, indeed, make a special effort to do so - in order to ensure those facilities remain open and their profits don't get hit or the place could become less viable to live in.
