Starling Bank - Mobile Cheque Deposits

Just received an email that mobile cheque deposits are being introduced in the Starling app soon. This has been a long awaited feature for me and means I can ditch an account held elsewhere used solely for that purpose.

Hoping Monzo implement this at some point, though it will only save me going to the bank once or twice a year... very cool feature though for sure.

Yet again it's iPhone App only. Starling Bank really do treat their Android customers as second class citizens.

The current information on the website states:

"Launching soon - we’re introducing mobile cheque deposits using the Starling app. We’re rolling this out slowly, so we’re sorry if this isn’t available to you yet. To check if you have this feature, go to Add money > Cheque Deposit."

It may be the case that either the Android or iOS app is updated sooner, and therefore some customers on one platform will get it earlier than those of the other. It may also be the case that some customers on the same platform will get it earlier than others.

My Android app currently states:

"You'll soon be able to submit a cheque to Starling using your phone. Until we have finished building this feature, all cheques should be submitted by post."

Starling have a history of bringing out new features, shouting about them on social media, only for you to find out you don't have the new feature and when you ask them why they say it's iOS only and "no plans" for Android yet.

FWIW my iOS app says the same thing. I've also found that the iOS app is somewhat broken for open banking (you need to review integrations every 3 months, works on Android, but not iOS)

Well I for one will be holding them to this promise, and will be kicking up a bit of a fuss if they renege on it. But there is certainly no evidence that they are not doing as they have promised.

It's important to note this is not a claim they have made on social media. I have received a formal communication from them by email, and have copied information found on their official website, and the information displayed within my Android app. These communications are subject to regulatory rules, meaning they must be clear, fair and not misleading.

It will be interesting to see what limits Starling put on the cheque amounts. All the ones who are offering the facility already have quite low limits. If I do get any cheques these days, they are usually for things like matured savings accounts and for much higher amounts than are accepted through mobile cheque depositing.

Hopefully long term it follows the same path as faster payments. If you go back some 10 years I recall limits of £100 or so(banks were nervous about fraud), whereas now £10k or more is common for persoanl accounts

Just had email from Starling saying they are reducing the interest rate from 0.50% to 0.05% from May.
