Thinking along the same lines, I posted my application & cheque yesterday. The last cheque I wrote was also to MONBS back in November.Kazza242 said:
I sent in a cheque with my postal application for the Monmouthshire BS Coronation RS because the information on their website states that the account must be opened in branch or agency.JamesRobinson48 said:
That was my thinking also. I figured that if the MonBS receives from an existing customer a completed hard copy application form and a signed cheque, ordinarily it should make little difference to them whether that completed application form and cheque are handed over in person or arrive by post. Of course it might be different if they were swamped with applications.Kazza242 said:

I thought that I'd stand a better chance of getting them to open the account via postal application, if I included a cheque for the opening deposit.

It's been at least five years since I've written a cheque and probably over 10 since I've written one paying myself. Of course, now, it's obvious that this is what I should have done.Sending a cheque with the application is usually only very important when opening the account near the month end, and there won't be enough time for them to open the account, post you the account number, and for you to then get a cleared payment to them by the end of the month.I could be tempting fate, but I don't think I've had a situation with Monmouth where they wouldn't open the account without an initial deposit being included with the application.

The Monmouthshire opened the account for me.Some of my chequebooks must be collectors items eg Abbey, last cheque dated 4 June 2017. Santander joint account still open though rarely used by OH who occasionally has savings accounts but no current account with them.@Kazza242 I think you also mentioned sending a letter to MONBS?0 -
Yes, I did include a letter with my signed cheque and completed application form because I wanted to include one of my existing Monmouthshire account numbers. Again, it was about boosting my chances of getting them to open the account via a postal application.badger09 said:

Sorry if this has been mentioned, but the thread is long and the search feature is useless, but is there any reason why the Suffolk Building Society 1-year Regular Saver isn't included in the list?I know it only pays 3.5%, but it allows monthly deposits up to £500, which I think qualifies it for inclusion? It's also instant-access, so you can ditch it at any time without penalty.

Why would you have a 3.5% reg saver limiting you to 500 a month when you can have the same rate and instant access with Tandem or 3.55% with Chip with basically no limit?Fingerbobs said:Sorry if this has been mentioned, but the thread is long and the search feature is useless, but is there any reason why the Suffolk Building Society 1-year Regular Saver isn't included in the list?I know it only pays 3.5%, but it allows monthly deposits up to £500, which I think qualifies it for inclusion? Don't know, but there are several regular savers listed on the first page paying even lower rates, so I just wondered why this one was excluded.

The list was last updated 1st April - do you know if the Suffolk RS was released after this date or not?Fingerbobs said:pecunianonolet said:

Also, @pecunianonolet the criteria was last updated in January - now easy access rates have increased much further, it may be worth a refresh
*EDIT: For criteria, see the first post in the entire thread:
'I am only including accounts where the interest rate is 3.75% or better, or 3.25% if the account has favourable conditions (e.g. you can pay in £500 per month or more, or if the account matures after at least 2 years).'If you want me to definitely see your reply, please tag me @forumuser7 Thank you.

Off topic:
Does anyone know how we should refer to the likes of Wise (formerly transferwise) and revolut on these forums ? I mean, they are not banks.
I've seen many instances where someone (including my good self) has talked about wise or revolut when talking about banks, and the next reply has been 'yeah, well wise/revolut is not a bank'.
I'm sure I've seen some finance articles call these fintech's. However, if you search online for fintech then the result is 'financial technology'.
Is 'fintech' an appropriate classification for wise and revolut or not? If no, then what would be?0 -
@RG2015 Do you have a link to the post your created on the banking forum?0
