Is this the HSBC/First Direct that you’re referencing? If so I get where you’re coming from, they really created a grey area IMO.

Standard terms for a fixed rate are that they can’t change it on the product mid-term:

That said, I’m interested to know if any other providers have done this recently, and upgraded the fixed rate on an existing issue of an existing product? I’ve had products where new higher rate issues I could apply for have been released, but I didn’t have HSBC/FD until last week, and I’ve not had any other fixed rate RSs where the rate changed mid-term. I only started with these in mid 2022, so this may have happened before then - I don’t know

Several years ago, Virgin Money increased the interest rate on all of its various 'fixed rate' RS issues that were then in flight.  Longstanding RS enthusiasts following this thread would surely remember that:  at the time it seemed quite unprecedented.

Thanks for explaining this @jamesrobinson48 - sounds like that will have been way before my experimentation with regular savers.

It’s certainly a nice gesture when providers do this, but I’ve never seen HSBC/FD (or VM) explain how their terms permit them to do it for a fixed rate. Does anyone know how/if they have some clause that permits it please? I did look through the HSBC booklets when they did it, but I couldn’t find anything.

I guess as long as they offered an opt out for those it would negatively affect (some benefits, pensions, tax-free allowance I think, but not sure?), then they can probably do it because it seems unlikely the regulator would say they weren’t fair or reasonable to their customers

Some Principality rates may be increasing today. My learner earner issue 3 now shows as 3.85% on the online portal area, but it was 3.70% before. N.B. The main website hasn't been updated yet, and maintenance is ongoing online so you may keep getting logged off.

Hoping the First Home Saver Online Issue 2 (and other issues) rate will be increasing, but not sure as haven't been able to scroll down that far before I get logged off!

    EDIT:

First Home Steps Account Online Issue 2

    £1.00 - £2,500.00 3.40% AER Variable
    £2500.01 - £7500.00 3.60% AER Variable
    £7500.01 - £25000.00 4.10% AER Variable

Any news on Learner Earner Issue 1 or 2?

Sorry, I don't hold those issues. IIRC they are currently ~5.15%, but Principality hasn't updated their rates booklet on the website for today's increases, so I don't know if they've gone up. If you've got online access, log on and click interest rate - it should show you. If not, maybe send them a message on twitter or give them a call.

I do have online access but don't log in frequently so had to reset everything and now have to wait for a code in the post. I might ring them to check the rate if no-one here knows.

    For information, just rang Principality.

Once again, no increase to issue 1 and 2 of Learner Earner which remain at 5.15%.

Some info for anyone who cannot get to a Monmouthshire Building Society branch, but wants to open their Coronation Regular Saver, paying 5.60%:

I am an existing Monmouthshire BS member.  I downloaded, completed and posted off a savings application form for the account on Thursday 13th April, along with a cheque and a letter.

They opened the Coronation Regular Saver account for me the next day (14th April).  I have received the passbook and account confirmation letter in the post today.

Thanks Kazza.  I posted to the Mon BS my application form with cheque on 19th April; they opened the Coronation RS account on 20th; I received the passbook by post today; and my cheque cleared already.  I don't much like writing cheques, but I'll make an exception for such an appealing RS account.

Thanks JamesRobinson48 for confirming that Monmouthshire BS have also opened your Coronation RS via a postal application.   :)

They are opening the accounts very quickly!  My account was also opened on the same day that they received my application.

    Well done, The Monmouthshire.

Just experienced a miracle! Put my Monmouth application in a post box on Wednesday 19/4 (I usually go to the PO for important letters but for once I didn't) using one of their own second-class franked envelopes. The ticket on the post-box said next collection 7AM - so Thursday 20th.
    Today - 21/4 - I've had my pass-book and a covering letter dated 20/4 from Monmouth.
Apparently the postmen have just accepted a pay settlement.
I'm still in a state of disbelief!

Yes, I am an existing member of Monmouthshire BS.
Sorry, I meant @JamesRobinson48, I saw that you were already a member from your post. It would be great to know if it's open to anyone
