I did the exact same as you. I haven't funded the account yet.  If they decline my account application for any reason, I guess I'll reapply through the app instead, as I now realise one is supposed to do. I was in such a hurry to pick up a 1.75% fixed rate RS that I wasn't fully paying attention.

The VM coaching app is helping me reach my (unexpected) dream of buying (more) property (maybe). Just opened the 1.75% reg saver and will do the current account switch offer too. Just preparing a new Nationwide current account with 2x DDs...
  • Help me out please,

I would love to sign up for this R.S with Virgin but:

Firstly, never had anything to do with Virgin so no ongoing accounts at this time.

Secondly, I have no interest in purchasing a house as I have one.

So, can I apply for this account?

If so, do I just download the VMHBC app to my phone and sign up for the account within the app, if so how?

Or, do I do something within the app then fill out the form via VM website kindly listed above in a previous post.

I do understand the app is all about attempting to help folks who wish to get on the housing ladder.

Any help to negotiate this mine field would be great.

I choose the rooms that I live in with care,
The windows are small and the walls almost bare,
    There's only one bed and there's only one prayer;
I listen all night for your step on the stair.

    • This product is only available to eligible users of the Virgin Money Home Buying Coach app. If you are not a user of this app we will transfer your account to our standard Regular E-Saver.

I registered on the app but deleted it once the account was open. I am sceptical that Virgin has a method to identify those accounts opened by app users and those that just click onto the webpage. Unless they have a crude method. They have so far failed to combine their banking systems and have yet to allow a single login for all their products. Hell the app doesn't even to ask you to login with your existing banking details for savings. Yeah right Virgin, I am shaking in fear that account to be downgraded

If you download the app, you have to sign up for the app first, and then complete the first checklist, giving your savings goals, salary and where you would like to live. You can sign up first by clicking on my account, and then sign me up, once you have done this go to checklist, saving up and get started, or you can do the checklist first as below and then sign up. Note the sign up for the app is not a sign up for the savings account, this is separate and comes after.

When you open the app, accept all cookies, then click on sounds good (most of these buttons are red and at the bottom of the page), then great what's next (x4) , then great let's go, give the details it asks for (Salary, how much you have saved, and how much you can save, then it displays a savings graph goal screen, then click on ok at the bottom, then tell it where you want to live, details of the house you want, bedrooms etc, then you will see another graph screen. At the bottom click ok sounds good (or not right now first if your savings don't add up for it), then you will be greeted with the savings account page, and a button saying intreating tell me more. Click on this and sign up for the app. Once you have signed up, click on the intreating tell me more again (you can get back to it by going back to the checklist and use the right savings account) and it will take you to the savings sign up page.

The actual link it takes you to after all that is:
    https://uk.virginmoney.com/savings/products/home_buying_coach_regular_saver/?utm_source=mortgagecoach&utm_medium=app&utm_campaign=savings

It is possible to register on the link above without any app signup, however Virgin warns the account will be downgraded if you do this without having the app. I don't believe they can tell easily.

I'm assuming VM are relying on only putting the account application link on the app to be enough, and the odd extra applications via sources like MSE isn't worth the hassle of a more rigorous scrutiny process.

I've sent Virgin a message asking if there is any specific requirements to maintain the app for the duration of the product term or to "use" it with any sort of regularity. Will see what they say, the T&Cs don't stipulate anything so they'd struggle to enforce any further conditions - but always best to get it from the horse's mouth!

You don't need to give any of these details, all you require to do is download app and provide a valid email address which they will email a code to allow you to sign up.

Once done that to earn the 100 points all you need to do is click on the individual links to pages that have articles to help homebuyers, they earn 5 points per page so just open (don't need to read) 20 different articles and earn your 100 points, once that is achieved you will get access to link to saving account.

Oh that is more private I guess!

I noticed on the virgin site my account is not actually open, but can still having money put in. It says we are opening the account. It is very possible a person will run a check to see which email is on the account and then compare it to an app sign up. To play it safe I have re-enabled the app until the account is fully open. But as I say above a very crude method open to error if it even exists in the process.

Or alternatively open up the Checklist and select the first two which are 50 points each saving a few minutes.
