Woop woop on being half way to mortgage neutral!!
I love the graphic too, I think knowing what things cost and where money goes is so critical. @zola
  • Interesting diary Zola, thank you.
I want to be able to put more money towards my mortgage but at the moment it's not possible - that annoys me!!  :disappointed:
However, I see there is a '5 figure club'...i'm in that already so I feel a little better.
    Stay safe everyone

You are so right @caeler - definitely focuses the mind and priorities
@PirateKit - sounds like you are already doing great, hopefully, you'll be able to make a slight change to up your direct debit soon!
@SpendingPennies - thanks! You will get there soon. You have a bigger mountain than me, but you are maybe already in your forever home, I am in a 3-bed semi, which is great for now but if we have another kid.... it could get crowded!!
  • Thank you @Zola. I have been paying my mortgage off for years though, and any extra I had paid in was wiped out when I had to take a 3 month payment holiday due to Covid. So I need  to start again, but FIRST need to get my overdraft and credit card sorted. Or try to make them better at least :)

That's January out of the way and now the mornings are getting brighter! I had a pretty busy month with work and it has completely shot past me.

The mortgage has now entered the five figure club, debt sitting at £99,762... psychologically, a slightly less intimidating number.

Confession time: I broke one of my main investing rules early last week. I have been an index fund investor this whole time.... but I have deviated extremely minorly, just this once.... with the whole GameStop controversy that's been going on.

I have been completely fascinated with the story of Wall Street Hedges vs the Reddit internet investors and I wanted to be a part of the story, so I bought one share at £140. Beforehand, I was mentally telling myself this is a silly roll of the dice, it feels like going into the casino for one hand of blackjack and I am fully prepared to lose the £140, just this once. I know this money may return nothing, but right now it's sitting at $320.

It is a game of chicken from the hedge funds who are aggressively shorting the stock vs the aggressive internet investor who is piling in to push the price up.  In one week, the Wall Street Bets subreddit has grown from 4 million members to over 7 million now, there is quite a movement going on.... some serious money has been piled in, and it will end in tears for many no doubt. There will be a documentary about it someday I am sure. I am captivated by the story and have no idea where the stock is going... down inevitably, but maybe after more rises? I am prepared to hold and see what happens, If it gets to over $500 soon it will be very tempting to not pull it out..!

I'd exit stage left with my money and watch from the gallery...
Be interested to see how you get on though (now you're on the front lines 😆)!
Good news on getting into the 5s club!
If it's not adding up, compound it!

I fear you are right @Grogged, it's sinking like a stone right now, but I am pot committed, hopefully, there's more upward drama on the rollercoaster ride yet..!
