  • Asda are supposed to be building a huge supermarket in Portadown. They're redeveloping the Edenderry area to include a cinema and supermarket. Supposedly Asda have signed up to be the supermarket. Portadown wouldn't have been my first choice for a new Asda though, as the town already has a massive Tesco's and there's a Sainsbury's at Rushmere just out the road.

Why would they take Ballyclare? I used to work for Safeway [not Ballyclare] and I know they had trouble fitting it all in. However, it will be my nearest store, yippee!

multi national or not ASDA beef comes from Ireland ,North & South .
But just watch the promotions 1/2 price or 1/3 off is not really 1/2 price or 1/3 off .

I know I'm probably in the minority but I think it is a shame that Morrisons have sold the old Safeway stores to Asda. I was looking forward to seeing the Morrisons brand here, as I quite liked Morrisons.

I would rather Asda were coming in addition to and not replacing Morrisons.

As i work for Safeway i can tell you to be very glad ABC that Morrisons have sold the Safeway stores. These are people who order with bits of paper and whose IT system seems to be 20 years out of date. To clarify on Ballyclare McGuck, they are at last getting the new store i am told.

As for Downpatrick, it is a shame as i know people up there, but you can understand ASDAs reasons for not buying. Unfortunately this means that unless an aggreement can be reached Morrisons will close the store. From what i can gather the Car Park has been "fixed" before, and yet it still isnt right. Perhaps as has been suggested someone else will open a Supermarket in another location or perhaps even ASDA.

Lidl at Junction one sounds absurd to me to be honest. But, perhaps someone else will open up there.

I heard a rumour that the Bangor store is closing for 6 weeks in September for the Asda refit and it will lose the dry-cleaning and coffee shop to make room for George clothing. Anyone else heard this?

    Ginger,
I was interested in your warning about promotions. Can you enlighten me further, please?

Next week ASDA are going to have a promotion on roast beef joints ,

the price has been £5.68 per kilo
the promotion price is £3.77 per kilo
The promotion label says" Reduced from £6.72 per kilo ....40% off ."

After the promotion the price will probably(not confirmed) be more than the £5.68 it is now ,could even be ..... £6.72 per kilo.

Thanks for the update arkonite. Our local Safeway in Bangor is due to close on 2 September. Shelves are becoming pretty bare in preparation!!
