Is it me or at 1.30 does the brick spacing appear wrong?  I thought normal bricks were supposed to be spaced 50:50?
I can't see what you're talking about.  Post a screenshot of it?

I don't even know what to say to this, it's so appalling and something like this should never be signed off.
I would say to keep going with this, they need to rebuild it properly. Imagine what will happen in 10 years, if you try to sell for example.
Would you buy a house like this yourself? Imagine going on a viewing and seeing this kind of shoddy work. I would run.
I dread to think what else is wrong with this house, if the brickwork is like that ...

    Thanks for the reply.
The problem is when the house was being built it was gated off say 50 meters away so no real chance to scrutinize the brickwork.

Even on the home demo day the house wasn't looking great and needed cleaning but I was told repeatedly the bricks just needed jet washing and any issues would 'get sorted' (saying anything to keep me happy).

I remember being in the sales office and quoting stories I'd read in the press and it all got pushed aside with 'Oh that's in Wales, completely different teams here, you're in safe hands'.

I really didn't want to have a downer on Persimmon and I've kept calm since December but now I'm at breaking point with them.

That's not even the worse part. Imagine if they CBA doing the highly visible bits right what is the state internally with the invisible bits like wiring, pipe work, insulation...

  • I am truly shocked that this is allowed to happen. After reading other threads on MSE, I had decided I would never buy a new build - this thread definitely confirms it.
I really hope you get something sorted.

yup, I am the same, I won't touch new builds, I don't care what extras they throw in.

I'm guessing he means it's not running half bond at the frame. Because it does not work out in brickwork they have cut a 3/4 bat at the jamb. This is actually normal practice on site having a half bat then 3/4, then 3/4 next to frame on the next course.
However technically, the jambs should have the whole brick and the 3/4 put in the centre of the wall, or in this case behind the downpipe.
In theory the brickwork should be set out below DPC with regard to frames etc, but it's not always done on large sites.

It isn't just newbuilds that can have poor quality brickwork. Ever since I started work there have been plenty, although I did notice a change in attitude when firms started using more sub contract labour in the 70's.
I can look at much older buildings and see plenty of mistakes in the brickwork, but as brickwork matures you don't seem to notice them. When I've just finished a wall people tend to look at it more closely than an old one.
  • I'll keep this thread updated - thanks for confirming for me that there are definitely issues as Persimmon had taken the position that there wasn't and I was being fussy.
