I'm late to the party, but I think you could have just connected the phone to the laptop, and copied direct from the source folder to the laptop, without the step to copy to the SD card.0 -

They should automatically have been uploaded to your Google photos.
Check in Google photos app and look for Whatsapp album. I have hundreds in there.
that was a problem for me as I get a lot of rubbish in Whatsapp......had to turn off back up in whats app settings0 -
That's true it would of been easier,was just thinking my old HTC used to take an age to copy images/videos to PC so was quicker to transfer to a memory card.0

Android phones running OS 4.0.3+ and iPhone models running iOS 9+ will still be able to use WhatsApp.
