Records show that King James VI stayed with Lord Sinclair at Knockhall Castle in 1589. Some 44 years later the castle was sold to the Udny family, with whom it remained until the mid 18th century, apart from a time in 1639 when the building was taken by the Earl Marischal for the Covenantors.
The second floor of the main block was divided into two, each chamber supplied with a latrine and fireplace.
