My parents bought a 1930s semi with the original bannisters and doors in the mid 1970s. One of the first things they did was to cover the bannister and the doors with sheets of painted hardboard. My mum thought the originals were 'dust traps'.briskbeats said:
To replaced with grey kitchen with a wall covered with cupboards, like a mortuary. These modernisations are the equivalent of the 60s and 70s with boxing in beautiful bannisters and doors.mum2boys83 said:

I did see the house on the Rightmove site (as you do) recently, and the bannisters looked like they had been restored and varnished. The doors had all been replaced, though.1 -
The covering up of original door and other mouldings with hardboard was popularised by Barry Bucknell on his DIY telly programmes in the later 50s and 60s.Silvertabby said:

Think my dad still has the 1970s Reader's Digest Book of Home Improvements, which was full of top tips on how to remove original features.Patr100 said:

We unboxed ours. The hallway immediately looked much brighter and whilst I can appreciate they might have been a pain back in the days of heavy, upright vacuum cleaners they are a doddle to keep dust free with modern brush attachments.briskbeats said:
