I've seen such carpeting before on open risers. I suppose it's because you want carpet all the way to the edge, but trimming it flush with the tread would cause it to fray. Also, there, it has the important secondary feature of cushioning the inevitable bumped head of anyone doing things in the under stairs alcove!General_Grant said:
