We have just bought our first home and found that. Not a prob as we are painting all the floorboards in that room. I assumed it was a quirk from our vendors but it's in that house as well.
Until about the 1930's, all carpets were woven - rather than the majority of modern carpets, which are 'tufted'. This meant 'wall to wall' carpeting was prohibitively expensive for all but the wealthiest until around the 1960's/70's, at which point synthetic fibres allowed 'fully fitted' to became an advertising feature for 'luxury' middle class properties.

Obviously the property is marketed at evil genius' - with the 'den' obviously being part of the secret lower level complex - therefore the black chairs are set out for the annual evil genius summit. Simples! That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

1950's 'wall to wall' becomes a 'thing' in America for 'modern' post-war houses.
1960's it becomes a growing 'thing' in the UK.
1970's the 'thing' has become shag carpeting...
1980's kids who grew up in fully carpeted houses consider them the 'norm' and consider hardwood floors a sign of luxury. That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.
