Apologies if I've put this one on before - I went to view this in January last year when it first failed to sell at auction with a guide of £290k. It's a repossession and had all the period features (apart from the porch floor) stripped out by the previous owner. I disagree strongly with the agent's description of "Although the property requires decorated throughout, the majority of this would be cosmetic" - when I saw it there was water coming up through the floor in two of the rooms and someone's put PVC windows into a listed building. Over the past year I've seen plenty of middle-class couples coming back down the drive with very disappointed faces, thinking they've found the bargain of the century as the price has dropped and then actually had a look at it. But it was a beautiful house once and it could be again and the price is now getting to the point where someone could actually make a profit on it, just. For comparison, this is what it looked like before the repossession: https://www.zoopla.co.uk/property-history/castlehill-house/princes-street/thurso/kw14-7dh/42775753

MCI said:Was it the fashion for a while to have a square rug in a room and just paint the floorboards around it (leaving underneath as is)? We have just bought our first home and found that. Not a prob as we are painting all the floorboards in that room. I assumed it was a quirk from our vendors but it's in that house as well.
Until about the 1930's, all carpets were woven - rather than the majority of modern carpets, which are 'tufted'. This meant 'wall to wall' carpeting was prohibitively expensive for all but the wealthiest until around the 1960's/70's, at which point synthetic fibres allowed 'fully fitted' to became an advertising feature for 'luxury' middle class properties.

That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

Just to add, the stair carpet had a runner which was lifted every spring and refitted half a step down to save wear on the same place - made the carpet 'new' againLove living in a village in the country side8 -

It doesn't look too bad to me but then you haven't seen what we rebuilt and not in the UK either. At least this one has all of its walls....
