I wonder what it actually looks like under all of that. I bet it is a handsome building.1 -

RelievedSheff said:The last house we bought had ivy growing all over two sides of it. The rest of the brickwork that could be seen was in good order so we took the gamble and bought it. It took us a good few weekends to get all the ivy off the house but surprisingly the brickwork and mortar beneath were in good nick with just a few tiny bits of pointing to repair. We were lucky that the ivy around our house hadn't really got onto the bricks, but having seen the damage it's done to all the wooden structures and the trees behind the house (2 have fallen down in the last 9 months because of it), I wouldn't go anywhere near an ivy covered house. It looks lovely and it was a draw to buying this house. What we've ended up with is 2 sheds that need pulling down and having to entirely replace all of our fencing on one side of the house as well as the 6 foot gates. Not to mention the other garden is entirely "bedded" which is going to take months of effort. I'm not sure we'll ever be rid.So basically, the 2 different types of ivy.The regular helix has roots that are up to 10" thick (I'm not joking!). We're having to effectively treat it like tree roots and it's everywhere. One entire garden bed, about 12' x 6' is going to have to be entirely dug up because the roots are so thick and just killing it isn't enough. So far, I've taken 10 1 ton builders bags of ivy to the skip.2

How on earth is that a benefit? I would be terrified they would escape and eat me.3

Wonder how much it costs to get all that foliage cut back on a regular basis.
