I think when the damage is so extensive that only a roofless shell is left, it is pointless trying to re-create what it once was as it will just be fake. What is gone is gone. Surely it would be better, given a blank canvas, to create something, stunningly modern but beautiful

It's grade 1 listed, so not an option.

But apart from the walls there is nothing left which would make the property Grade 1 listed. Any work carried out inside will not be a restoration but a rebuild and therefore 100% non original.
