I'm seriously making plans as to how to get to Rievaulx now. I can take my bike on a train to York or Malton, and then cycle the rest of the way.

I think the tourists would become quite annoying although the cafe is very nice

Sweeping up the dead flies might have made it a bit more appealing…

Is that actually a dog? It looks like it could be a rabbit to me. 

There is also a small statue which has been obscured for privacy reasons. 

My father was born on Canvey Island, though I've never been there.

I had to study the floorplan a bit to work out what you meant. But, I see it now. If that was my home I think I'd remove that door altogether and minimise the door jamb.

Block up the door entirely and make the space into a cupboard accessible from the lounge. Get to squeeze a proper unit in to that corner and more space for wall units.
