Did someone REALLY think that putting a washing machine, a hand basin, and a toilet (behind a canvas screen) was an appropriate use of the 'spare' space in the entrance hall!

ADD.  That screen does brings to mind the toilet facilities in the back of an old C130 (Herc) transport aircraft.  ie, a porta-potty behind a canvas screen.  As the only female pax, (a pre-Christmas beer run to Germany, before anyone gets too excited!)  I had been pre-warned about a favourite aircrew joke - tilt the aircraft so the canvas screen flew out to the side, exposing the user in all her glory.  The trick was to grip the canvas screen between your boots and hang on for dear life.  The things you do for duty free booze!

Careful!  You'll give Southern Rail ideas...

I'm planning to do exactly that. Seriously. That's even where I imagined putting it.

That looks like a sad house. I can normally see past what previous owners have done but that one just makes me sad. Exercise equipment is the least of its worries.

Another room ruined by a pointless fireplace.
Not sure it’s pointless. It’s just a fireplace to prove heat. Historically fires would have been the only source of heat. This one looks like it is still capable of producing heat. Some people like period features.
It is missing a fire back and grate, so would need some investment to make it usable. Perhaps install a Godin or Deville stove for a more period look.

Does anyone really want to start a fire these days? The mess, the hassle, the cost. We are supposed to be reducing emissions and pollution.

Waste of space, makes the room an awkward shape.
We had two wood burners in our old house. I absolutely loved them. They were the sort that burn really hot to reduce emissions. I never minded lighting them and they didn’t make any particular mess. Our current house would cost a fortune to line the chimneys so no wood burners here just a rubbish gas fire.

I can't see what's wrong with exercise equipment in a house. Can someone please enlighten me?

  • I think it is that many people buy exercise equipment and then don’t use it but they leave it as a not very attractive ornament.

You sound like a town/city dweller. Fair dos, but some of us don't live in cities.
So, yes, I do want to use my wood burner, thank you. Currently, it's running on our own wood we took care to plant years ago, so we'd have it when fuel became ultra-expensive, like it is now.
Back in 2009, we saw the way things were going and left the city, where we had a nice fake gas fire. That was appropriate to a place with 100k people, who certainly didn't deserve the pollution they had in the days when I was a kid. We guessed the eco-evangelistas wouldn't stop there, though, and how right we were. Something like that is now becoming 'undesirable' too!
If I want to have lots of 'wasted space' in my house, I will. That's my business. If you want to go live in a pod, that's your choice, and I'm fine with that too. :)
Actually I spent a decade living in a fairly rural area. Hated the fireplace, it was draughty and the soot from the fire was awful for air quality.

If you like living in and undersized and awkward space then be my guest, but I prefer flat walls so I can choose my keen layout freely. And central heating.
