Not sure it’s pointless. It’s just a fireplace to prove heat. Historically fires would have been the only source of heat. This one looks like it is still capable of producing heat. Some people like period features.[Deleted User] said:

ADD. That screen does brings to mind the toilet facilities in the back of an old C130 (Herc) transport aircraft. ie, a porta-potty behind a canvas screen. As the only female pax, (a pre-Christmas beer run to Germany, before anyone gets too excited!) I had been pre-warned about a favourite aircrew joke - tilt the aircraft so the canvas screen flew out to the side, exposing the user in all her glory. The trick was to grip the canvas screen between your boots and hang on for dear life. The things you do for duty free booze!

For a lot of properties nowadays, I get the impression that they are designed for rental due to having large numbers of toilets and bathrooms. Perhaps for this property the owner was aiming at that, and didn't really think through the consequences of the easiest way to achieve it.Silvertabby said:

I worked on the conversion of an already small 1 bedroom terrace house to two bedrooms. The lengths they went to so maximise every square inch of space were astonishing. Similar thing in the entrance porch, one side they put a washing machine and a hand basin above it, yes the basin was above the washing machine. And the other side a WC. They did build a wall around the WC and put a door on it.Silvertabby said:

It is missing a fire back and grate, so would need some investment to make it usable. Perhaps install a Godin or Deville stove for a more period look.Green_hopeful said:
