For most people the amount they have to pay for their car is a slight inconvenience but it is easier to do than it used to be. If you
    a. don't have a direct debit
    b. don't put a reminder in you riary or electronic organiser
    c. don't stick a bit of paper on your windscreen
then the resulting fine is completely your fault and saying you have got other things on your mind is a waste of time and perhaps next year having paid a fine it will move up the list of priorities.

You would think the DVLA had stopped writing with a reminder the way some people go on. If you are capable of ignoring you are capable of ignoring that little circle of paper.

You do get other idiots who don't bother taxing £0 VED stuff - and that's either because it's not got an MOT, it's not insured, or they don't think they have to...

It does seem hugely redundant and wasteful to tax a £0 VED vehicle. I suspect part of the problem is that it's often described by salesmen as "pay no road tax" and that you don't need to pay any other bill for £0. I know this is how it's always been done and that's obvious for classic car owners who've had to do this before.

    But why bother?
I assume one reason is that it might not be £0 every year, but why not just renew the tax until there's a balance to pay? Send off an email saying "Your VED is still £0 and has been renewed for a year, let us know if you need to declare it SORN" and the jobs done.

Not at all. It's exactly the same as for any other vehicle - it's an annual demonstration that the keeper is still responsible for the car, it's a positive affirmation that it's on the road and MOTd/insured as required. If that positive affirmation isn't made, then there needs to be a similar positive affirmation that it's off the road.

Car 54, your wrong because I know you can get fined for having too many tickets on display. They quoted that on Parking Wars programme on TV last night.
It takes the warden too long to find the valid ticket.

Well, who can possibly argue with sources as authoritative as that...?

It must be true then ... Did they happen to mention which law applied?
If you spend any time on any parking forum you will see that parking companies (and councils) have a tendency to make up the law, confident that most people will pay up without question.

    Why?)
Theres already a requirement for continual insurance, and insurance and MOT can be checked online.

Why waste money making someone assert something you can automatically check anyway? Why not assume it's on the road unless SORNed?

    Not for all cars.

Only for ones that are... taxed.

Because how do you cancel a SORN? You... tax the car.
