I would need to get someone to move things I want to keep when I buy a new appliance. When I got this laptop (it was a gift from my Daughter) I got the chap who used to sort out any problems I had with my desktop. I haven't needed anything doing to the laptop in the time I have had it.

Get your grandson to fit an inexpensive solid state drive to your current HP laptop and then clean install Windows 10 to it. Job done, from less than £20.

I can talk him through it if need be.

It's the upgrading over the top that is causing the issue. A clean install will be fine. The SSD will bring the performance into the 21st century.

It's also nonsense, because you still get updates on the Chrome OS.

Why would you have to worry about updates anyway? You need to move out of the old spinning hard disk drive mentality.

I'm running a thirteen year old Windows laptop here with no issue.

Your Chromebook would likely be in the bin.
