Want to buy new Lap Top .or Chromebook

My current laptop.is 8 years old Running on Windows 7. Could have upgraded to Windows 10 but due to problems reverted to.7.
My Granddaughter and Daughter are using Chromebook and I think this would suit my needs. I would appreciate some recommendations. I am panicking as this morning on TV they were saying continuing to use W7 for online banking etc is no longer safe. I shop online including grocery shopping from Sainsbury's. I have got Norton deluxe security on all my appliances including my phone.
Advice would be appreciated. Sue.

A new laptop will be W10, why not install W10 on your current one and what problems?

Make , model, ram and hard disk size of pc. tell us the free space too.

If you really cant get 10 to work, putting linux on that PC will most likely be better and cheaper than a chromebook

I have a 5 appliances Norton. I have always had security and it is around £30 for the year. I do online banking and buy things online and I would not feel happy putting in my bank details without knowing I had some sort of security on it. My phone is fast so I don't really think it is effecting it all that much.
Budget I had not really thought about it as yet. Not looked at what is out there but I don't want to spend a fortune. A few hundred would be my intention.
This laptop is 8 years old> I have to use it plugged in as it won't hold a charge not a big problem as I use it at my dining room table. I use it for emailing, letters ,social media, photos etc shopping online etc but no gaming . I have Amazon Prime but I don't watch it on my laptop as I have Netflix. I am on both on a family package that my daughter pays for.
I was thinking of changing it in any case so am willing to buy something new and I think a Chromebook might meet my needs . My Grandchildren both at University use theirs to take to lectures but my Grandson has got a desktop that he transferred all his work to. He has just completed a Masters following a BSc and about to start his first job. Chromebooks seem to be much lighter and also I would be happy with a smaller screen etc. I still have a desktop which I never use. It is taking up space on a trolley in a cupboard so probably should get rid of it. It would need wiping clean and I am not sure how to do that. My Grandson could probably do it for me. That is about that. Thanks for the input. Sue

Windows 10 would never complete the upgrade so I gave up on it. Currently I have a HP laptop. I don't store a lot of stuff on it. I do online energy. letters. photos, some documents etc. I really need to clear a lot of things that are so out of date on it.
I am 78 so manage quite well but I am not involved in doing a lot of things that younger people would want to do. Nowadays most of my photos are on my phone well all new photos and on an SD card.
I would need to get someone to move things I want to keep when I buy a new appliance. When I got this laptop (it was a gift from my Daughter) I got the chap who used to sort out any problems I had with my desktop. I haven't needed anything doing to the laptop in the time I have had it.

Before buying anything, I would speak to your grandchild. His new work place may probably give him a work laptop, and since no longer being at uni, may find his chromebook unused? After speaking to him and talking it through whether a laptop or chromebook would be better for you (they know you best, and the abilities of a chromebook), make a decision. You may even inherit his old chromebook?

What software so you use to read your email?

Susan ... I'm sure you're aware that PMs from low post count newbies should be treated with circumspect.
