Pay as You Go or cheap contract?

Hi, I've had a work mobile for 7 years with all calls, texts, 4G etc. paid for but I'm now changing my job within the company and they've kindly said I can keep my phone (Samsung Galaxy S7) but they will take me off their corporate phone package.

Its been so long since I've had a contract that I'm worried I'll be talked into getting something I don't need. I'm 65 so not particularly phone savvy.

I make about 10 mins phone calls a day, about 20 texts, go online for shopping or Spotify, only about an hour tops. I don't download movies or watch Netflix etc on my phone.

Can anyone tell me if I would be better just getting a Pay as You Go or would it be better to get a really cheap contract. Some seem to give quite a lot for £10 but if, in reality, I'm only using a couple of quid a month, what's the point in getting a contract?

Also if I go for either of the above, is it still easy to keep my number.

I know this all sounds penny pinching.... but that's what this marvellous website is all about!

Absolutely. See MSE article - Best Pay-as-you-go Sim Deals £7.50/mth for unltd mins, unltd texts & 2GB of 4G data
(ignore £7.50 in the title - there are options more suitable for you)

Do you not have internet/wifi at home?
Also if I go for either of the above, is it still easy to keep my number.
    Very easy.
  • Yes, free wi-fi at home (or when I use bus). Thanks for this!

you don't want PAYG if you use your phone daily.

    you want SIM only.

    About £7/month.

Before you commit to a new sim you need to make sure that your S7 is not locked to one phone company. Somebody at work may be able to help you with this. If it is, see if it can be unlocked. Then you will have the freedom to use any phone company but before you do, use the phone companies "coverage" web site and enter your post code just to make sure you get good coverage where you live.

It sounds like the giffgaff £6 (500 MB) or £8 (2 GB) goodybag may suit you, both will have unlimited calls and texts from the 26th of FEB https://community.giffgaff.com/d/33064069-we-re-adding-more-to-some-goodybags-in-february
  • If you opt for a contract, check the small print as to whether they charge you a small fortune if you exceed the included data amount. Ideally the data should just cease at no extra cost.

While it is easy to switch networks as a personal customer, you are not the customer in this case, so can’t simply request a PAC to switch. Ask your admin people to contact the provider and see what can be done.

Take a look at Plusnet who use the EE network.

2.5GB data plus unlimited calls and texts for £6.50 a month.

    https://www.plus.net/mobile/sim-only-30-day

30 day rolling contract so you aren't stuck with them for a year unlike many contracts.

I'm on sim only for £5 month. You'll struggle to beat that pay as you go if you're using the inter web at all

I use Smarty network which is owed by Three theres No contract.
If you don't use all your data you can sell it back to them.
also if you recommend them to someone you and the person who takes one of there plains get a free month of paying also you can leave anytime you like.
