I’ve just asked Alexa what is a mirepoix? New word for me too but I always use onions, celery and carrots as a base for most things.
I’ve done it again! Just found half a slushy cucumber in the bottom of the fridge. I’m going to stop buying them.5 -
If you have a cucumber that's not going to be eatn you could use a quick pickle for them, my nan used to make one for sunday tea with thiny sliced onions and thinly sliced cucumber, just in some vinegar. If you soaked the onions in a bit of water before you put it in the pickle they won't be so harsh. And lo and behold, found a recipe for it , looks like a lot of nans did thatThat base is the basis for a lot of italian and french food.

I used to keep cucumbers in the fridge and they were always going soft and watery. Then read somewhere that they should be wrapped and kept in a cool, dark place. Since then have wrapped in foil and kept in larder cupboard and they have lasted ages in good condition.9

Reporting in for the week 🙂
Have just wiped down Inside of fridge & sorted contents. A bag of rocket & spinach starting to go over has been bagged & frozen - added to “soup” drawer. Unfortunately I have dairy products & a sauce to report as binned - about 5p single cream, 20p bbq sauce & 50p of Philadelphia cheese = 75p in total 🙁 Containers all washed, dried & recycled - like a good girl 😉
The contents of the 4 kitchen freezer drawers have been rearranged more sensibly & there is a bit of wiggle room. I need to get back into the habit of at least writing a weekly menu plan - unfortunately neither DH or DSis are ever forthcoming with any ideas 😖Of course with the way the pandemic is going & talk of more infection peaks, I think I need to sort out my kitchen cupboards & create more space for supplies - dry goods, tins etc. So have just had a little flurry of activity & have managed to create half a shelf of space 👏 by moving all my small & medium glass jars (for hg olives + hm tomato & apple chutney - hoping for a decent harvest of olives & tomatoes & a neighbour has promised a supply of apples 🙂) to the empty drawer in the living room wall unit 🥳 Also sliced the going over bananas & froze them.
Dinner is lo hm cottage pie & green beans for 2 & the 3rd member of the household will have lo hm cheesy pasta topped with slices of mozzarella (from freezer) & sliced tomatoes.

That's not too bad at all MRS SD !! I've just binned a really manky lettuce, n a few tomatoes .Not getting anymore shopping until Sat, so am hoping there'll magically be extra freezer space for my bread 😂
I had air fried potato skins for tea, with cheese n dips, n have made a potato n carrot mash for tomoz .Very stodgy n comforting, with crunchy bread 😋
Thanks for the cucumber tip POLLIE 😁"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"

I made some barley water, from cooking pearl barley and saving the water, simmering it with lemon quarters fished out from my cups of lemon tea and re-used, clementine peel (scrubbed) and a chopped lime. I also added some thin slices of ginger, which is nice.
I don't really want to add sugar, so I'll have to experiment a bit. I'll try some freshly squeezed orange juice when the oranges I've ordered arrive. Until then, I'm drinking it as it is, which is interesting!
I like pearl barley, so will eat the cooked grains in whatever concoction I dream up today! 😁(I just lurve spiders!)
