Perhaps the model will instead be that they do offer loads of accounts (like Virgin) but that you can only have one of all issues (ignoring 3/4) at a time.
In that case, I'm not sure why like other banks/building societies they don't have just 1 regular saver product and simplify the terms to remove the max balances on specific dates.

Leeds do seem to like to make these accounts complicated (the issue 3, 4 and 5 are very different to each other).

Like ctdctd, I opened the Issue 6, noticing the T&Cs still point to issue 5, and then later seeing that they say on the website you can't have issue 6 if you already have issue 5. So why did their systems allow me to open the issue 6?

I have funded the issue 6, and set up an SO for the remaining months. Might have to un-do that when they have got their act together, let's see.

They have updated the T&C's now and the restriction is mentioned at the top. :(

  • "The account can only be operated in branch or by post."

Sounds to me like this is actually a branch operated type of issue 5, with a different issue number.

Perhaps issue 7 will come along on 01 Sep for online operation (?) !

Nope, that's exactly the same as issue 5 which could be opened online but had the same clause regarding operation.

I will have to fall back to Virgin then, as I have issue 5 (and 4) so I cant open issue 6...

Virgin is a better bet anyway. The headline rate is slightly lower, but that is more than offset by the more flexible conditions and the slightly longer term.
