    Just for info:

I am a 'she'. Not an excuse for being techie-challenged, just a fact.

I didn't call the grumpy one a 'random person etc..'. I was talking generically (as others were helpful too) and not specifically.

The term was not meant to offend, rather it was to illustrate the nature of this forum.

I do not believe my problem would have been solved so cheaply - in fact the company would have made more from me if I'd chosen to not buy a new machine.

If anyone is so easily offended then I am honour bound to not be upset by the reaction.

I am happy to be ignored, seems it's a badge of privilege!

Oh dear, I only asked for advice. Didn't realise I was being tied into a contract or starting a forum stooshie.

    Thanks, again.

YES, I am not saying that buying a new laptop because one unknown person tells you that Win10 can't be installed is a wise choice. But there are so many factors when someone decides to buy something that we don't necessarily have to know. And because of that, there is no reason to be RUDE and AGGRESSIVE when someone, politely, says "thank you for your advice but I decided to do differently".

If I had to write here every time I decide to buy a brand new laptop, I would be inundated with posts like "you are wasting money!" "you should have bought a refurbished laptop!" "terrible choice!" "what are you even doing here?".

That other guy wrote 1 post to try and help the OP, and 3 posts to complain about the fact that OP decided to buy a new laptop instead of following his advice.

    :T

    Succinct (is that ten characters?)

Yes he appears to, some would say he doesn't tolerate fools gladly, the only thing I can say in his defence is that he really does try and help others, more than himself perhaps, but ignore my untrained psychological view:(
I see he has been PPR'd , a shame really since there are some on this forum that take offence far too easily, and believe me I have experienced this. Posts being taken down for whatever reason , and not because of the real "hate" or "offensive" language used by the poster. Sad but true

Sure, but I can see how Everywhere would feel his advice had been ignored. It's easier, IMO, for OP to come back to a thread she (sorry!) started, to ask further advice, than to pack up and pay someone.
If I had to write here every time I decide to buy a brand new laptop

You don't have to, of course, but I repeat that the thread started with someone wanting to install W10 on a laptop. That option was too switftly abandoned, IMO, after employing the forum for advice. How about just coming back and saying 'I want a new one, for £300, any good deals?'. I'm almost certain plenty of people would say 'no need, we can fix it' but
I would be inundated with posts like "you are wasting money!" "you should have bought a refurbished laptop!" "terrible choice!" "what are you even doing here?".

You missed out the obvious advice 'ditch Windoze and install Linux lolz'
I do not believe my problem would have been solved so cheaply - in fact the company would have made more from me if I'd chosen to not buy a new machine.

See, I think you've made another leap. You didn't need to go to that tech guy, you were getting perfectly good help here. We're supposed to be helping each other save money, and specifically in this forum, with technology. If the answer to every question was simply 'take it to a shop', there wouldn't be much to do here.

I'm glad you got sorted, but if you'd had a bit more patience with the forum, I reckon you could have:

Got Windows 10 onto your laptop for free.
Got an SSD installed, and Windows 10, for £15-£25 and a screwdriver
Got a good value for money laptop. We simply don't know whether you did or not.

All I'm saying is that people here tend to be too aggressive and bossy when it comes to considering others' opinions (including wanting to give money to someone to fix the problem for you).

I experienced it myself when I dared to suggest that sometimes brand new laptops are a better choice than refurbished ones, it was like asking someone to jump over a cliff. And don't hide behind the 'this is a money saving forum', because that's not the case, at the end of the day everybody is entitled to spend their money as they see fit and it doesn't mean that they are 'wasting money'. Remember the Apple products analogy.

She asked, people advised, she decided. It should have stopped there.

I'm glad I didn't post here when I had a leak in my bathroom and I called the plumber, I would have been crucified.

Can I be even more clear - W10 could not be installed on the machine. The graphics card was the problem, not me!

I would not have been confident in replacing the hard drive myself. Yes, I could have asked a friend, however I chose to go to a small well-known and reputable local company. Not a shed.

Of course I got a machine that was good value! I made all the necessary investigations. Whilst I'm not confident / competent to undertake work on an laptop I worked within a university department with plenty of competent and qualified people whom I consulted.

    Is that enough explanation?

Now, can this whole sorry episode be put to bed? No need to pick the scab anymore. I have laid out my appreciation of all those who offered advice. I am not the person who got offended though I had the opportunity.

She asked, people advised, she decided. It should have stopped there.

This is the only bit we're even slightly disagreeing on. You're missing the feedback loop, which is also what the OP did.
'Would I be better taking it to a shop?'
'Should I just buy a new laptop?'
'Is it going to be too much hassle to repair?'

Would have been great questions. It's not about asking permission to spend your own money.
I'm glad I didn't post here when I had a leak in my bathroom and I called the plumber, I would have been crucified.

I absolutely get your point. I can't think of plumbing incidents, but there are stacks of times people come on asking about DIY-ing with electrics, and are told in no uncertain terms to get in the pros. Computers are more DIY friendly than plumbing or electrics IMO.
Can I be even more clear - W10 could not be installed on the machine. The graphics card was the problem

No, Gers, this is extremely unclear and is very far away from being a fact. I'm aware you've had trouble with it, and that a tech shop has told you this, but I'm still not convinced.

    HP G72. Does that end in a00, b00, c00 100 or 200?
It seems to have ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470, Intel HD Graphics 4500m - that's an ATI 'graphics card' and Intel built in graphics. is that right? AMD Catalyst software and drivers work just fine for me on old ATI desktop cards on Windows 10. Having the dual graphics might complicate things but I still don't see a deal breaker.

Shed? And reminder, you didn't need to replace the HDD, to install Win 10, it was just strongly advised.

I don't want to run this on, but I'm sorry, I'm curious. I can't think how a computer with 4GB of RAM, has graphics that can't take W10 somehow.

Ok, let's try to add some technical details, for what it's worth now.
This laptop seems to be running on a Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset, which is notoriously difficult to work with during Windows 10 upgrades from Windows 7.
It may work with a new installation, but it's no guarantee.

Last time I checked, that Chipset was not supported on Win 10, therefore it wouldn't have been a straight-forward upgrade (I am not saying it would have been impossible, I'm just saying that the technician didn't lie).

Whether someone would have done it anyway, that's open to discussion. But wanting to get rid of the problem, small as it may be, by purchasing a new laptop, it's comprehensible at the very least.

You've answered SO much better than I would have been able, and in very clear technical terms. Huge thanks.
