And the engineer (is there a better term for someone who works on machines??)

    Technician.

An engineer will have suitable qualifications and will be registered with a technical body (IEE for example, or whatever is the equivalent for IT).

Thanks!! I just applied the best generic term I could muster, I've just checked the company's website and it does indeed use the term 'qualified technicians'.

It's odd that someone should take such offence at someone not doing as he advised. Hey ho...I am stil grateful if slightly bemused.

    Did you read my message?

It's a money saving forum, remember? Instead of the advice here, you paid someone to do the work, they said they couldn't, then you bought another laptop. You don't mention how much it cost. It may not be any better than the HP - if it had 4GB of RAM it still sounds viable. You could have been running Windows 10, depending on those pesky graphics, for free, or as recommended, for £15-£25 with an SSD upgrade.

...or he could have decided to buy a new laptop because his old one was red and likes blue.

I don't understand why lots of people here can't accept different views (especially some). "Money saving" also means that no one should ever buy brand new iPhones. Or iPhones in general. I bet many of the money saving experts here still do buy them.

"You don't mention how much it cost". Why do you care? I don't think it's your money anyway, is it?

    Thanks for that reassurance.

Acutally I asked for other work to be done to the laptop in addition to the installation of W10 which would have added up to around the same cost as the new laptop. I made a considered decision, I'm not a moron!

MSE is a brilliant forum though, as I've said before, it's not a cult to be followed slavishly. All the advice given here was really appreciated and helped me make my decision.

Well, he didn't mention this, you just made it up. The reason he bought a new laptop, taking the reasons in the thread at face value, is because he thought this laptop wasn't capable of taking Windows 10. It's very likely that's untrue, and that he didn't need to spend that money. The thread started with trying to upgrade from W7-10, not asking what laptop to buy.
Again, this is the tech section of *Money Saving Expert*, not a computer enthusiast website.
"Money saving" also means that no one should ever buy brand new iPhones. Or iPhones in general. I bet many of the money saving experts here still do buy them.

Exactly. It's about getting the best deal on that iPhone, not about simply not buying one. No problem there. Let's stick with the iPhone analogy. OP has had trouble installing the new iOS, and just runs out and buys a new iPhone, instead of simply restarting the phone, or making sure it's plugged in, or something. A bit simpler than the W10 upgrade, but along the same lines.
Why do you care? I don't think it's your money anyway, is it?

It's not my money, it's none of my business, I'm just trying to help OP and others, but again *Money Saving* - it's fundamental that OP could possibly have done this for free or for £25 with a well advised upgrade, but instead has spent more money. He has not saved money. We don't even know if he got a good deal on the new computer. Do I need to say *money saving* again?!!!

Of course I made it up. What I was trying to tell you is that *money saving* has different shapes and forms. What works for you might not work for me. You like refurbished laptops, I don't. You like iPhones, I think they are terribly overpriced.

Yes, but he could have decided that his iPhone was old anyway, and maybe he just took the opportunity to get an upgrade. Is that money-saving? Probably not. But nothing about iPhones is 'money saving'.

'Money saving' is what something is worth to you. If you don't want to spend days doing something that you are not familiar with, or that you'd rather have somebody else do it, then there is no point in arguing whether someone has wasted money.

In my eyes you wasted money the moment you decided to buy an Apple product, no matter what deal you managed to get.

Sure, no problem here. I'm Android, BTW, not iPhone. The point is getting a good deal on whatever it is you buy.

He didn't ask about getting a good deal on a laptop, he was just having trouble installing W10 on a current one. It escalated quickly to going to a computer technician, and spending money, then going and spending more money on a new laptop.

Indeed. But he did ask for advice on how to do it.

You're not meant to be telling people what to buy, remember. How do you know OP hasn't got a stinking deal on the Lenovo?

EveryWhere can come on a bit strong sometimes, but seems to have been more helpful than someone the OP actually gave money to, just to be told, 'nah, just buy a new one'. For all we know, OP's Lenovo isn't any higher spec than the HP.

Simply, in my opinion, OP was a bit quick to go to the computer tech, and again, a bit quick to go and buy a new computer. It's his money, it's none of my business etc. But here we are together on a forum talking about it, because he ASKED us.

YES, I am not saying that buying a new laptop because one unknown person tells you that Win10 can't be installed is a wise choice. But there are so many factors when someone decides to buy something that we don't necessarily have to know. And because of that, there is no reason to be RUDE and AGGRESSIVE when someone, politely, says "thank you for your advice but I decided to do differently".

If I had to write here every time I decide to buy a brand new laptop, I would be inundated with posts like "you are wasting money!" "you should have bought a refurbished laptop!" "terrible choice!" "what are you even doing here?".

That other guy wrote 1 post to try and help the OP, and 3 posts to complain about the fact that OP decided to buy a new laptop instead of following his advice.
