My DM's laptop is still runnng W7 Home Premium as every attempt to download W10 fails. The error message makes no sense as I've done loads of searches and found others with the same problem. It seems to be do do with drivers although I've done the troubleshoot programme and update drivers option from HP which didn't find anything wrong with them.

Another resolution seems to be to disable driver signatures altogether.

The error message code is C1900101-40017.

Not being too techie as regards hardware I'd appreciate some advice please.
  1. Do I not bother - the laptop will be OK without W10
  2. Do I take it to a workshop to be sorted before W7 support switch off?
  3. Is disabling driver signatures an 'easy' thing to do?

My DM is very elderly and hasn't used the laptop for about six months, I keep it runnning and use it sometimes.
Thanks

Not all drivers are signed (especially really old ones). If that was my laptop, I would risk it, worst case you go back to Win 7 (remember to take backups before you do anything).

What can happen is that some of the laptop's devices (video card, sound card, chipset, etc) may not be compatible with Windows 10.

Thanks - video and sound can be done without if they fail. Is the chipset etc more important?

I would probably take out the old disk (£25-ish for 250GB) and put an ssd in it, then start a fresh install.

Like car problems, it is better to give the person at least the make and model of your car, rather than just say the obd scanner generates such a code..

You have googled for 'PC model??? problem C1900101-40017'. This is a fresh download, and hopefully you are not like me just leaving old installables on usb sticks?

I can't take out the old disk etc - and don't think that spending on a new one is worth it for the use the machine gets.

    Don't understand the car analogy.

    Yes.

Haven't got anything on usb sticks - again, don't understand what you are asking.

Not sure about video, sometimes if you can't install the proper driver you get horrible resolutions or refresh rates.
That being said, I really doubt that the chipset will cause you any problems.

If you can post make and model we can check online.

Suggest that if the laptop is still working for your DM to leave as is. It won't blow up when support stops. Just ensure that anti-virus is up-to-date.
Best W10 option is a clean install, possibly to SSD, but you haven't told us make+model.

    It will cost about £30 for a 256GB ssd , not £250
should be easy to install. Old disk keep and if w10 doesn't work swap w7 to the new ssd.

Thanks folks - it's an HP G72 notebook with 4GB RAM - fairly elderly though not as elderly as my DM.

Realistically she won't be using it again so I'm just keeping it for her photos / docs (all currently backed up to two separate portable drives) so perhaps I'll just let it go.

As long as W7 doesn't stop working. The router is passworded and the machine runs Avast free software. I routinely run Malwarebytes on it so (so far) it's 'clean'.

I'll leave it alone! Thank again.

Hung out with Windows 7 for a long time, software that i used would not run on windows 10. Running it in a virtual machine was laggy.

New more powerful computer and windows 10 went on right away.

Stick with 7 or move to 10? Any reason to keep using 7?

My windows 10 looks like windows 7. Classic Start menu and 7+ Taskbar Tweaker. Its hard to spot any changes. I also run the old version of task manager etc. Thats either good/bad depending on your needs.
