Paying with your Phone

Just to let you know, I was able to add my Subcard into G Pay this morning (I had to scan the original card - couldn't see a way to transfer the QR code from the app). I used it at lunchtime and it worked fine (there's a free 1000 points promo at the moment).
That is really good information! That helps me alout. The subway card app on my phone is prone to crashes very frequently and i cant be bothered with it anymore. I dont have a card though so i will have to get a card and scan that instead. Alot of these apps i.e greggs is another one seem to crash continuously. I believe google pay is the way forward to solve these problems0 -
I think I must be too yellow and cowardly. I just would not feel comfortable (security-wise) to use a phone for payment. Judging by the length and content of this thread, I am in the minority with how I feel.I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.

i felt the same as you @willing2learn
However, we must adapt to the times. This is the future unfortunately - like it or not. We need to prepare ourselves0 -

Well, we all have to make judgements for ourselves, I don't think it's cowardly per se.
For me, I prefer my phone because I have a habit of shoving cards into my pockets and then losing them, to then be picked up by some scallywag who goes on a contactless shopping spree (happened to me twice before). Whereas I'm unlikely to lose my phone, I take better care of it and I'd notice if it fell out, and now my cards stay in the bottom of my bag in case I need them.
Still, it all goes to pot when your battery runs out :-D0 -
Out of curiosity, does the 'payment by phone' thing work okay when you are abroad? Would you need to buy a new country-specific SIM for it to work?
I only ask because I will be out of the country for three months later on this year and am still tossing up between carrying dollars, local currency, credit cards, debit card (Starling), travellers cheques (do they still exist?) or a payment-enabled-phone. I will more than likely go with a combination of the above...I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.

Google pay is linked the to phone and not sim so i believe it should work on any sim. All apps are linked the phone (whats app maybe different)
Unless someone can correct me0 -

I wouldn't say you're 'yellow and cowardly'. I did use google pay for a shport while, but no longer use it as I saw no benefit to me. I won't be going back to it any time soon.0 -

It'll work anywhere that a contactless card works. Essentially - your phone is just replicating a contactless card when it uses Google pay etc. Not all countries have contactless everywhere yet though, and of course unlike a card you can't subsequently shove it into the terminal if they don't.0 -
I'm not old enough to remember bank cards coming in and the whole paying with a card thing.
So all this grumbling about using Apple/Google (basically mobile phone pay) ..... to those who can remember the bank card coming out and being a new way to pay for things, did people do equal amounts of grumbling about this 'new' way of paying back then that they 'couldn't trust'?0 -

I’m not sure that anyone is grumbling. I don’t have an issue with using my phone to pay but I’m not going to do so until such a time that I see a benefit to me. Those who have adopted it feel that they are better off using it for various reasons.
I do remember the 1980s when card use at a retailer meant putting the card in a machine and manually swiping it to get a copy of it on paper which you had to sign and I assume the shop needed to bank. It took a minute or two and was a pain to queue behind. Things have improved and it’s now quicker to pay card than cash.0
